What woods should I ask for? 
I'm getting a flamenco guitar made by Salvador Castillo of Paracho Mexico. He is offering Spanish Cypress back/sides and European Fir top for $400 more than Mexican Cypress and Englemann Spruce.

I know that Englemann takes longer to open up than cedar, but is reputed to give a better final sound. I don't know what he means by "European Fir".

Any opinions on the difference between European Fir and Englemann spruce? How do both compare to cedar?

How about Mexican vs Spanish cypress?

Any advice would be welcome.

I had (just sold) a Luis Sevillano with both woods you mentioned, typical to Mexican builders. The guitar was rated by one of my teachers, here, who toured for 23 years, professionally, as a "great accompaniment instrument".

Obviously, a lot has to do with the builder and construction, and just sometimes the 'magic' that happens in a guitar....

The prices seem a little steep for the 'upgrades'. If you want the most for your bucks, I'd go with a Master Grade European spruce, and keep the Mexican cypress on the back and sides, as these are not as critical as the top.

I built my guitar with Master 'Euro spruce (about $150) and Spanish cypress, 1st Grade, for $120, and if I build again, I might even go 2nd ($90), as there is a bit more figuring in the wood (back and sides). Where the $400 'upgrade' fits in, I'm not sure, because I would assume that his selection of wood would run at least $100.

Tell him you want a credit on 'his' wood, and you will send 'the good stuff'....

Tom Blackshear made his Reyes copy with Englemann, and really likes it. Anders got some stuff that he really liked, too, so Englemann is a good choice. Just up to you.

Master Grade cedar should run you about $70 for a top. It does 'open' faster, and has a different tone. Many of the best Ramirez flamencos have that top, and they are awesome guitars.

But in the end, much of it will be plans, the builder, execution, etc... And if it's a spray-finish, ask them to go THIN on the finish!!!!!!!

I agree with Ramon go for the lower grade wood on the back and sides and get the best spruce top. personally I like sitka spruce for a flamenco it´s more elastic and vibrant.
