Now Ron, I'm not holding you responsibel or anything, but Radio Tarifa... really not my cup of tea at all!!! Very odd, I just couldn't get into it at all. In fact I left before even hearing their encore. I guess I can see the appeal, but the little snatches of flamenco (including the little Mick Jagger-esque lead singer's dancing) just left me craving the real thing and feeling frustrated with what was there. The best bits were when the band did their 'climactic' pieces - you don't even notice the build up until you realise there is a certain fever in the audience - yes, those bits were impressive. I love a lot of 'arabicy' (to coin a phrase my friend once used to describe a Lebanese restaurant!) music. I find it really haunting and stirring. I love flamenco. I love the way sometimes the two meet in flamenco, eg Zyryab. But this 'mish-mash' (I really can't think of another word), with cuban and all sorts of other bits thrown in. It was just too much. My head was hurting. Dare I say it, maybe I'm just a bit too young?? The audience was a bit older. They seemed to really like it. Maybe it would grow on me.. but I'm not sure. Yasmin Levy was on for an hour first and this didnt help - I'm afraid her Shakira-esque (albeit impressive) vocals didnt do anything for me, and the set was just a bit corny - at one point she insisted the audience joined in the singing!! Painful. All in all I think we were sat in our seats for 3 hours, which would have been a stretch even if Paco was playing (then again...!) Ah well.
