yes, no lyrics in flamenco are really "jolly" . Majority about love, and that is the most painful shyte. Lots of cowardice and bravery going on there. Mandilón translates to "apron", so double meaning? Also Pilón translates to "trough" like drinking water for horses. So as the link states, I envision a girl taking some dude by the head with her apron, dunking his head into the animal drinking water.
Stu, looks like it could be time for you to finally embrace cante jondo and seguiriyas!
Letra are often expressing complexity of different emotions at once, even ones that are paradoxical: just like life.
EDIT just saw you referenced El Pele Canto, great example. He's singing about the complexity of emotion expressed in flamenco cante:
Aunque no tenga alegria este tono en que yo canto lleva mar y lleva azucar lleva amor lleva quebranto lleva sal y lleva azucar lleva amor lleva quebranto
Even though it doesn't have joy This tone in which I sing It carries the sea and it carries sugar It carries love, it carries sorrow It carries salt and it carries sugar It carries love, it carries sorrow
Even alegrias are often tinged with loss e.g. celebrating something and saying you'll remember it when it's gone. Aurelio Selles at the estribillo/coletilla: Go to the sea dear Pepe No matter how far away you go, I'm going to see you.

haha NOOOooooo!
yes maybe! Thanks for the reply. tbh I am aware that just cos its alegrias it doesnt mean its all lyrics about sun and good times! Just this mandilon word kept popping up. just wondered if there was some history to this in alegrias for some reason?
Might start working on some more bits of seguiriyas now you mention...but i have just over filed my nails so i feel limited!
What I'd really love to learn in regards siguiriyas is those classic chaotic jerez siguiriyas into arpeggios!!
Yes that's exactly what I mean!! And that's who I was thinking of cos he obvs did ask that at sadlers weeks on June!
And it's more thumb and index and ligado .... no arps. I was remembering it wrong!
It is the same type of thing I show as the first falseta in this video tutorial. Honestly, Diego is not very clear and articulate with it compared to his great uncle (who is the best at it IMO). Also I have my version of the manuel Morao thing in my Formative Works book (it’s on Amazon). But you should start with the video:
