Similar to what happened around here a few years ago…attempts to erase the Confederate Generals legacies by knocking down statues and changing road names that commemorate what are perceived today as racist individuals. I can assume like here there are a handful of Spanish “rednecks” not happy about the situation.

Good. Ensenada was the architect of the 1749 Great Raid (Gran Redada / Prisión general de gitanos). He still gets to keep all his streets in other Spanish cities; no need for him to have a street to his name in Cádiz.
