post-Almoraima falsetas

I absolutely looooooooooove listening to Paco's pieces from what I consider some of his most progressive albums - in particular, the post-Almoraima albums - Sirocco, Zyrab, Luzia, Cositas Buenas.

I'm curious to know if any of you can play any of the pieces from any one of these albums in full - even at a much slower tempo than Paco. After all, Paco is super-human.

Also curious if you've ever taken lessons from a teacher that could play any of the pieces from one of these albums in full. I get that most people don't learn pieces that way - they pull falsetas they like. So I'll modify this question a little and ask, have you ever taken lessons from a teacher that could play (even if slower) at least 20 falsetas from across all of these 4 albums ?

And I had one last idea. If you would like toward learning falsetas on these albums, perhaps we could start a group where each person could work on one until they know it well enough to teach it to somebody else - and then we could teach each other. We would coordinate so we are all working on different falsetas. My ear is at best ok - and I would have to start with Leiva's books. And even then, one falseta could take me weeks or months to play through at a much slower speed, but in tempo. I sometimes wonder how quickly it takes others.

Best,
Joe

Hey Joe, yes I take lessons with Grisha. He can do what you're asking. I strongly advise reaching out to him.

Thanks Michael - I know Grisha is capable - but from everything I see that he's posted on the internet, it seems like he does more of the Almoraima and before stuff.

And he is an absolute monster - I don't think I've seen anyone play Paco pieces as well as he...which inspires me for my next post.

Yeah he absolutely rips and he's an excellent teacher. I always feel self conscious giving anyone advice about anything, especially throwing someone else's name out there, but it was a coincidence that I read this post because he had just shown me some stuff from Siroco so I felt the need to reply.

A long time ago I knew La Barrosa, but replaced it with my own stuff. Years ago on foro we had the “advanced challenge” where a bunch of us learned Tomatito’s Ardila in full. Those were fun and inspiring times on foro. Simple fact is, it is just too much work. Most of us that can do that stuff would rather spend the time creating our own stuff, mostly out of laziness but honestly I sit and work on Paco or whoever and I quickly get inspired to take it elsewhere and abandon the learning process. I can learn single falsetas quick (tomatito in 8 minutes etc) but to retain that material over a complete recorded piece requires a lot of time rehearsing. So basically it’s a very rare thing, even in spain, you are requesting.

But I have been doing some modern stuff with my annual Paco tutorials. These two have material from Zyryab. I also know the song Zyryab and Cancion de amor....But I am up for tackling any single falseta you might be after, just name one.

Almoraima is exceptional because it isn't a string of falsettas. You can find almost very phrasing of it in his earlier recordings. It is such an exceptional piece for being much more than a sum of the parts.

The beginning of this Verdiales Granadinos could be Almoraima falsetta. Paco's brother Ramon Algeciras accompanies Cobitos in 1972.

There is a subtle connection between abandolao compas, Jaleo compas, and solea Escobilla.
