HR's avatar photo guitar

Decided to add an avatar and thought i would share a few full size photos of Her.

She is my number five and I tell people its my first real guitar as the last of a series of three 650mm, 3mm at the 12th fret, 8-9mm at the saddle sub 1000gram, radial braced flamenco. I made up three parts of everything using the less superior for the first and saving the best parts for the this one. This was a great way to learn and refine as I went along.

I did goto a 12 hole bridge later once a ran out of break angle. I also spent some more time with my French polish but probably could have kept at it ;)

Looks organic, nice job. Does it have a golpeador? I can't tell.

Gorgeous!
I love those pegs (all your pegs. There's a few other peg-porn photos you put up here in the foro...)
... and the unabashedly clean & simple soundhole decoration/rosette.

I also appreciate hearing about your materials approach to ramping up to this.
I hope to start my first build soon.. (gathering tools and materials... just finished plastering the workshop corner and putting an electric outlet and a light there...)
I was thinking to start with the horrid eucalyptus that infests 80% of Portugal, as I don't expect my first few builds to be high-quality, and will need to perfect my solera etc...
this will allow me to use quarter-sawn (I'm sawing up some now from logs...)
I guess this non-tone-wood could be suitable as the legendary 'madeira-mala' guitar you don't mind bringing to a riot or street brawl...?
I have a couple of logs of cedar saved for after I know what I'm doing...
(cut right after the forest fires of 2017 that destroyed most of central Portugal including my house and belongings, so kinda special... kiln dried lol)

Andy,

I was inspired to add a profile/avatar photo after you changed yours to your new headstock design.

As you have noticed not a lot traditional about my guitar building but nothing all that unique ether. Basically a... let's say an organic cumulation of ideas that came about while studying Spanish guitar builders, some years of practical study in sonic/vibration reduction used in aircraft building and repair, and a hodgepodge of spur of the moment inspiration; most practical in nature inside the box while the ones you see are aesthetic.

My real limitation is being out in the wilderness as it were where Flamenco doesn't exist so I have no baseline for my guitar sound. We had planed a couple trips down to America this spring and I had planned a few meet ups with fellow builders to get some feedback and experience. I was also thinking about just shipping my guitar on a tour but it's about $200 a leg at its cheapest so that's not going to fly.

My plan was to get past the ten guitar mark then really think about selling them. The selling is not that important save for keeping the boss happy, not breaking the no more then five guitars in the house at one time rule, and of course to assuage my ego.

In the end I enjoy the journey: the challenge, successes and failures, dreaming up ideas and implementing those of others, while creating beauty that becomes that much more in a players hands; wether my own shaky attempts or the masterful fingers of the maestro.

Aaron,

Welcome to the Foro.

Funny thing about the pegs. They were the first part I made... The lacewood pegs were not really done when my partner says, oh my they look like fox heads, we have fox that wander through the yard on occasion, so I just left them like that. Not the most practical that's for sure.

I started building less then two years ago, I have seven hanging around here and there, one on the bench, and more then a few bouncing around in my head.

There are years of build threads here on the foro and I recommend you dig around and read them, while bookmarking those with the most meat on their bones to back over to nibble on when you feel starved for that missing detail. I also hang out at the delcamp Luther forum where again there are years of building threads. I have a couple build threads at the Delcamp under the same user name.

My number two is a street brawl guitar. I did some crazy experiments as I was building her. She lives in the shop.

I love the idea of Eucalyptus. Block it out in back and side chunks and let it sit some to see what it's going to do. If it doesn't do,anything crazy strip off some 3-5mm and let it sit for a while. Guessing there is some stunning fugir hidden in there although inversely proportional to stability. Go big or go home!

I went with the lets build a quick ugly lets learn without getting carried away instant gratification program. Many take the other route and build stunning guitars in their kitchen with only hand tools taking a year or more. There is little wrong with eater as long as one gains satisfaction in the process

Andy,
Negative golpeador. When I was taking these glamor shots I knew I wasn't done with the shellac.

I'm really afraid to put one on but will on request.
