Nate Smith

So this might seem off topic but bear with me....so I went to James Madison university and the greatest musician in my music department was a jazz drum student, a year ahead of me, named Nate Smith. After seeing several student recitals of him accompany small jazz combos, I got addicted to his unique groove and transmission to the audience. It’s rare for traditional jazz drummer with brushes to project so much “duende” to the audience. Anyway I followed him on line after school, hoping he would get recognition. He finally has as of last year he made the cover modern drummer. He put out an album of solo drum grooves called “Pocket Change” which I enjoyed. So here is an example of his funk style, just high hat snare and kick, it’s really cool:

And here is a track I liked from pocket change:

And so I arranged one of my rumbas to go over top of that one:

Flamenco funk fusion would be interesting. Why don't you try this one? You can add flamenco guitar to it. Each part is 15 seconds long at 1:40-1:55, 2:32-2:47, 3:25-3:40, 4:17-4:32. I don't know if it's possible.

Wow he has Compás. Those comments were pretty funny and kinda warranted!

I realize he is doing a similar groove here but instead of overdubbed shaker he does shaker with right and everything else with the left!
