Advice needed: Ricardo Sanchis guitar

Hi, my friend has a Ricardo Sanchis guitar that was made for Boosey and Hawkes (London). It needs a little TLC (clean, polish, new strings etc.) but is free from damage apart from some scratches from where it has been played. A vintage piano restorer in Cadiz, who also has some guitar experience, dated it at around 1915-1920.

My questions are, does anyone know anything about these guitars and what kind of price it should fetch?

Hi Neil, there’s a couple of non-export examples of that vintage on eBay at the moment. A search there could give you an idea.

One of the listings gives a bit of history on the maker, as well. I don’t want to quote from it here in case it’s BS, also not sure on the rules here about quoting eBay prices. The danger with doing that is it’s speculative and then the asking price goes into the Foro archives and starts getting misquoted as realized. But there’s a couple there you could look up. One in Germany and one in Spain.

Thanks a lot for that Rob.

Yes, I knew a bit about the maker. I guess my main concern was whether there was a big difference in quality between the export and non-export builds around that time and what effect that might have on the price.

Update: contact with the Ricardo Sanchis family revealed the guitar to be pine fronted with walnut back and sides, and of fairly standard construction for the time (1920-1930).

As a next step will probably get it cleaned up and restrung to see how it performs.

Does anyone have any advice on how to give this guitar an initial clean (to reveal what is underneath) without damaging the wood? And also do the wooden pegs need any special treatment?
