And now... a Reyes!!!

After finding (and buying) a 1960 Manuel de la Chica 25 miles from home two years ago here's a 1973 Manuel Reyes for sale 50 miles away:

https://www.2ememain.be/musique-instruments/instruments-de-musique/guitares-acoustiques/exceptionnelle-guitare-491393058.html

Seems to have a crack and some ripped varnish next to it. Completely original though.
Leaves me cold this time...

thanks for spotting!

Would you explain what the double R exactly stands for?

And, sartorius, why are you cold on that one ?

This was Ronald Reagan’s main Juerga axe.

At first I thought maybe it was Roy Roger’s old guitar, but he would have had his name emblazoned in pearl across the fretboard.

The “ R R “ stands for Rolce Royce, they used high english Rolce Royce polish for that. Unbreakable.
You know the saying, “a Rolce Royce never has a breakdown, at the most ot does not work for a while”

The tried the same with Bentley’s polish on Conde guitars, but that never works.
Bentley is the poormans Rolce, as the Conde is the poormans Reyes, so, they started fighting soon.
Bentley did not understand why they had to polish the guitars in Valencia, while the Conde’s are made in Madrid.

Anyway, the Golden RR is from that period.

Well, the real good ones are those from the 80's onwards. In a recent interview, Reyes' son says the only thing that changed in the guitars is the modification he started to do from the 80's (inside, but don't know what exactly).

4:20 "Este último patrón (last pattern/bracing) hizo ya a partir del año 80. Y eso... ya iba haciendo este patrón..."

Maybe Rescue and Recovery in this case and then Rock n Roll

Well, looking inside the guitars it would appear that they changed over the years. Some examples

1959 - 7 fan struts and 2 closing struts
1964 - 5 fan struts and 2 closing struts
1978 – 7 fan struts
1989 – 7 fan struts plus strip under bridge extending just beyond the ends of the wings
2003 – (Blackshear plan) 7 fan struts plus strip under bridge extending the full width of the guitar plus 4 little “anti-wrinkle” pieces separating the ends of struts 2-6

I often wonder if these little "anti-wrinke" pieces were for just one guitar with a potential problem. Does anyone know of any others?

The common factor in older Reyes guitars is the dye from the rosette pieces running and making an ugly stain. Were they sold like this? Did Reyes have an old man with a sweaty thumb to give them the authentic Reyes look?

And by the way, what happned to Manuel Reyes Hijo? Has he become a hermit fulfilling an impossible backlog of orders? Has he bought a yacht in Monte Carlo with his inheritance? I hope that he is happy and in good health.

Rob

For what I saw the under-bridge patch can be of varying length.
In my opinion he used it to balance the lateral stiffness of the top (longer for wobble tops and shorter for stiff tops).
The 2003 plan is the only one who mentions the anti-wrinkle little bars and so I assume it was used exceptionally.
