"Estoy del otro lado del porton".

Sounds like a song about constipation from the point of view of...well....

RE: piezzo (in reply to estebanana

My friend in Spain is an interesting aficionado, he loves flamenco, but he's a great bolero singer himself. He is Spanish, but he thinks flamenco shouldn't be messed with by people who do it halfway. He's a scientist by trade, but a singer after work. He wants a guitar to use for his Mexican songs and boleros. He's not into flamenco guitars, he wants something funky and original with a cutaway.

He told me something really funny once after a late nigh flamenco gathering in San Francisco- Someone from Spain was singing por buleria and the it was palo seco, he was just using a counter top to mark compas. The Americans were intoning ole's and thick praise. Some letras were old chestnuts I recognized, but a few odd ones were slipped in. My friend said he heard one in particular that got many oles and much approval. He told me that letra was not a flamenco letra that was old and standard like the others, but the les americains thought they were so deep into it they uncovered a deep old letra. He said they were deluded and pretentious and grumbled like a real sour puss. Then he burst out" Condi! That letra was the theme song to a kids TV show from the 1970's which was about a clown! Only a Spaniard my age would know that!"

I used to go to the big guitar concerts: Paco Peña. PdL, Nuñez, Amigo...In every case the guitar was miked, often to incredible volumes. In Spain, whether in festivals or smaller venues, a mic is always used, normally on a stand, but sometimes clipon or DPA.

Piezos are never used.

Indeed, that’s why I bought a DPA. Killer mic.

Claro, but tell us about the four saxaphones that are always in flamenco shows?

Hey estebanana, when I type "La Rumorosa" into the Youtube search thing, a whole lot of clips pop up. Do you have a specific URL? I gotta see this guitarra chingona.

I have never seen saxophonos in a flamenco show, but here we have Antonio Lizano who plays sax and thinks he can sing flamenco

Trust me...it’s never “incredible volume”....in most cases if the main guitar doesn’t feedback in spots, it’s not close to being loud enough. And that’s even when they bring their own sound guy. Never saw a vicente show where he didn’t feedback during the stupid bolero. Every once in a blue moon there is sound guy who understands and has the guitar really at the proper level and eq (stop scooping low mids guys!!!!) and it’s perfect...but it’s really rare.

RE: piezzo (in reply to estebanana

On flamenco guitar it always seems to me more mids and a rounded off treble works well. Add in bass as needed. Mist sound techs don't know that, and treat acoustic nylon Guitars like steel strings in a rock band and try to keep them from being muddy mid-range. So the 'smILe' setting with dropped out mids and punched treble seems deeply engrained in sound culture. I think a shallow 'frown' setting us better to start with so mids are slightly moved forward and bass and treble support them. The meat in accompaniment is in the por medio grip and those basic chords need to be able to be stomped on hard without feedback.

And I hear guitarists who salt the thumbnail and ring finger well also have less feedback. Probably Sea salt from the Dead Sea it optimum.
