Rib scraping video - building new Ne...

I'm building a new negra right now and the person who commissioned it ask that I make detailed notes on how some of the process works.

I don't currently have a drum sander so I thickness ribs the heave ho way with a plane. I made a video of scraping half a rib to a final rough thickness using a fixture that holds a scraper blade 2mm off an indexing block.

You just pass the rib under the stop and scrape just enough for it to pass under. Result is nice prepared rib on both sides dimensioned to an even 2mm. Ready to have any fine adjustment to flexibility done by feel. At this point I might go a little bit thinner at waist, or on a cutaway, but rib otherwise ready to bend.

I may build a dedicated rib drum sander next year, with big electric motor, nothing sadder than an underpowered rib sander.

Meanwhile I'm in good historical company with this method.

Wow! That is gorgeous rosewood!
Is a machine planer not delicate enough for this?
A lot more interesting to watch hand planing I’m just curious.

That indexing fixture is really cool. Clever, too. Also interesting is your collection of home made scrapers.

Someone asked to show the how I made the fixture, it's pretty simple. I'll make a video about it.

The rosewood is about as good as any Indian rosewood I've seen these days.

Cool. I made a jig like this on a smaller scale for thicknessing veneer
