Difficulty playing flamenco with lon...

This may seem like a strange problem and having big hands is of course advantageous for certain guitar techniques but when it comes to playing rasgueado, particularly a continuous one, I struggle with where to hold my hand in order to hit the strings correctly.
If I leave my thumb resting on or just above the low E string I tend to hit the strings too harshly but it is also awkward to take my hand away from the guitar body it makes retiring to playing picado a slightly awkward transition. I also tend to get a tired wrist/forearm when trying to keep it constant and fluid.
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.
