People outside Japan love Japanese pop culture, but when you live with it everyday it becomes cloying garbage you have to tune out. When I was growing up, a lot of the cartoons (if not most) that aired on French television were Japanese. Goldorak (apparently called UFO Robot Grendizer in English, thanks wikipedia), the mysterious cities of gold, Sherlock Holmes, Olive et Tom, etc. French cartoons were gloomier and all in all not nearly as entertaining. It's only much later that I realized all of these cartoons were Japanese imports. To me they were just French, and to this day I've still got that attachment to them that is really just nostalgia I guess. I have no idea what's come out since the 80s though, except the Miyazaki movies that for some reason really struck a chord with French audiences (probably because, just like in French movies, nothing ever really happens in them...). As for "graphic novels", my brother was more eclectic than I was. He had anything from the Japanese manga like Akira and the like to US comic books like Marvel or whatever. I was more of a Tintin, Asterix, Gaston Lagaffe kind of kid.
