pmamama arpeggio? Is the mamama part alternating on the same two treble strings, like strings 212121? Or is the string-to-finger mapping somehow different?

If it is mamama on 212121 (or 323232), you can practice doing scales for 5-10min a day using only m and a alternation (it can be apoyando, not tirando, so - picado). I bet ma picado is much slower for you than im picado. Write down the tempo that you can do a clean scale with a good tone; in a couple of weeks you should be making significant progress. Doing this should spill over into ami/ima arpeggio proficiency and speed.

EDIT: Here's a more hardcore exercise (note how mamam goes on strings 32123 first and then amama goes on 32123):

I have no idea what to picture myself with this. Any example of it being used in actual playing ?

That's not a normal idiomatic movement on the guitar. I doubt it's messing up your ami.

One thing you might do is play am together like a chord. Then play am so that there is only a tiny bit separating them, rolling it. Then play am so there is more and more space, gradually. Repeat this a lot until you feel control.

You can also play a loud and m soft, a soft and m loud. a loud and m medium, a medium and m soft. Etc... the more control you have, the better the movement will be.

A little scale practice using am instead of im might help out a little. Don't overdo it, though.

El abejorro, by Emilio Pujol (published by Ricordi, I believe); play it pmam instead of pimi.

Gerardo Nuñez Encuentro DVD (comes with a book). Everyone should have that anyway, sections cover all techniques, including arpegio, and including working different combinations of 2 and 3 fingers.

You could also just take whatever you are trying to play with ami arpegios, and play it through with ama and then mam....

and/or just arpegiate a dim7 chord* up and down the neck with pama, then pmam

*(6th string open; 5th string 2nd finger 2nd fret; 4th string 3rd finger 3rd fret; 3rd string 1st finger 1st fret; 2nd string 4th finger 3rd fret; 1st string open)

You can practise pretty much any right hand arpegio or tremolo with that, also alzapua, rasgueado and string crossing with pulgar and picado...
