If you want the best functionality you need good quality machines. So why would anyone choose pegs? Here three possible reasons.

1. It’s quicker to change strings. Not much of a deal.
2. Some suggest that lighter weight reduces sustain and makes the guitar more flamenco. Marginal or imaginary?
3. It gives you a warm feeling to be in touch with the old cheap guitars that were the forerunners the modern flamenco guitar. There is nothing wrong with warm feelings but the effect is surely lost if you spend a fortune on expensive carved pegs with fancy inlays. And whoever got warm feelings from geared pegs?

But there is one killer reason.

4. If you find a guitar that is absolutely fantastic, buy it. Of course it might have pegs but who cares?

I bought my first peghead for reason 3. It worked well until one peg snapped on a gig. I had to borrow a pair of pliers from a stagehand to grip the stump to tune it.

In later years my fingers started to get stiff and painful so I decided to give up pegs but I bought two more pegheads for reason 4.

Imaginary.

You forgot the most important reason to have pegs. They're beautiful and nobody will ever be confused as to whether it's a flamenco guitar.

I'm getting pegheds for this reason basically. It's just more flamenco looking.

Rafael Rodriguez (Cabezas) is one of the finest accompanists alive. For years he played a Reyes with machines, while he was looking out for a Gerundino with pegs. When he found it, he abandonded the Reyes and now plays his Gerundino exclusively

I know very well my Lopez Bellido (at least this

) and I know very well how it sounded before and after the conversion from pegs to tuners.
Really no difference at all in he sound.
The only difference is that now I can control the tuning of the guitar with much more precision. No regrets at all.
