RE: luthier 20 strings-where to buy ... (in reply to rafapak)
I'm in the UK too, and mostly buy from https://www.stringsbymail.com/ the're in the USA, but even with postage, its still often works out cheaper than buying in the UK or Europe. just don buy so many that you have to pay import duty! I usually buy 2 or 3 packs and this doesnt breach the threshold

anyone know what the threshold for import duty is?

As long as it is under £135 there is no customs duty.
You will have to pay VAT if the total value including postage is more than £15. If it is a gift the limit is £39. They are better organised at collecting this now. I bought quite a lot a couple of months ago (mainly EJ45s) and after paying VAT it was just about worth it still.
All the information is here. Do your calculations carefully!

the falling pound in recent times is making this more of a problem, its easier to go above the £15 threshold. and in that case as well as the VAT that's payable there's an £8 handling fee by the post office.
i last ordered 2 sets of EJ45TT from stringsbymail ($25) which, due to the falling pound now works out at £18 delivered, I then had the VAT and handling fee, a further £11. so £29 all together. still cheaper than buying in Europe (£36 delivered from stringbusters.com)! but not so attractive as it once was

thanks for the info, a couple of years ago I ordered some stuff from stringsbymail but wasn't expecting the extra VAT/handling charges.... i also had to drive 15 miles to the nearest town to pay and collect AND then had a disaster with the car as got stuck with only first and second gear and had to drive all the way home at 25mph with hazard lights on and a whole stream of irate and impatient drivers trying to overtake/run me off the road etc.... i sort of vowed never again, but maybe should reconsider....

Does anybody know whats happening with Luthier strings. All shops in Australia are out of stock and so is Strings by Mail. They only seem to be available now at Luthier themselves at a very inflated price.

Their owner died a while ago so there seems to be no production... It is also questionable to what will happen. Will somebody buy the machines? It seemed the string production was a pretty "one guy" shop
