honey locust wood (Gleditsia)

honey locust wood (Gleditsia)

a friend of mine brought me some wood planks, enough for plenty guitar backs and sides.
He says, "you can use it like cypress for your flamenco guitars"
The wood is very try and perfect quarter sawn.
Do you know this kind of wood? What do you think?
Density is like cypress! Color is different (red/brown).

Give it a try. If its well cut, then it will produce a well sounding guitar if the rest of the guitar is balanced out to that wood.
Besides that, noone that has never built with it can give you any hints.

2 important factors are weight and taptone.
On a wooddatabase like
http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/honey-locust/

I can see that the weight is a good deal higher than cypress, so I wouldnt compare it to cypress and I wouldnt work it like that. and the taptone you have to find out yourself.

A wood that is very close to cypress in both weight and taptone is Grewelia Robusta. Madinter sells it as Silk oak. I have built with it and I like it.
I´ve also had very good results with Canadian cypress (Alaskan yellow cedar)

The biggest problem with woods is not the wood itself but the clients that are going to buy your guitars. Flamenco guitarists are extremely conservative. So it could end up being cheaper for you to use real cypress.

good luck

I came across some info about Honey Locust and Black Locust on an acoustic guitar forum if it's of any interest to you

I made one with Honey Locust, not like Cypress, more like rosewood, but blonde. A comparable wood is Palo Escrito.

But it is a very nice wood. Not like Cypress at all.
