Ukulele Festival

For those like Miguel who are seriously into the ukulele, the following article appeared in the August 14 edition of the Washington Post. There will be a "Uke Fest" at Strathmore Music Center in Bethesda, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC, on Wednesday, August 19. Sounds like fun.

(Quote) Ukulele fans, unite!

By Roger Catlin

Small in size, but large in popularity, the ukulele is at the center of the biggest free outdoor music event at Strathmore. The annual Uke Fest is led by top musicians, but enthusiasts also are invited to bring their own instruments and strum along before the show. Adapted from a Portuguese instrument, the compact cousin of the lute was brought to Hawaii in the 19th century by Portuguese immigrants. Ever since, the ukulele has been closely associated with Hawaii, whose broader culture also is being celebrated at Uke Fest. But the instrument also has been picked up by pop stars in recent years, including Jason Mraz and Eddie Vedder, who recorded an entire album of “Ukulele Songs.” (Unquote)
