A Compás flamenco metronome - http:...

Dear flamencists,

A friend of mine and I are working on this project :
http://acompas.audio

It is now publicly available and usable.
We also have an Android application available for free here :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=audio.acompas.app

Un saludo flamenco,

Olivier

Sounds awesome Olivier - sadly in playstore I've the message "Device incompatible with this version." I'm using Android 4.1.2 and my son's 4.2.2 does no better.

And here in the Android browser I get a message saying I should use Firefox or Chrome - Safari does not work well here.

I am starting to wonder is it the genetic or epigenetic makeup of Android that makes them so incompatible with flamenco metronomes??

Doesn't work with Safari on iOS either, rather limiting your audience.

For this metronome, we are using a recent web technology called "Web Audio API". Basically it means that the sound is managed in javascript programming language. That's why you need a recent browser.

Dudnote, you should install Chrome or Firefox on your mobile phone and use the website (http://acompas.audio) in one of those browsers, not the Android App. It works, and the design adapts to small devices.

Escribano, sorry if it can't work on iOS. Blame Apple, not me. It's technically impossible to make it work on iOS due to a limitation they add on purpose in their operating system in order to prevent websites from doing annoying audio ads. There's nothing I can do. All the web-based metronomes I've tried (flamenco-oriented or not) fail on iOS.
PS: it works on Desktop Safari, because Apple did not put the same limitation on their desktop operating system.

One more remark for Android users : since we use recent programming techniques, Android >= 5.0.0 (codename: Lollipop) is required. That's why Dudnote cannot install the app on his phone. Sorry about this, but there's nothing we can do about it.

Ole!!! I just tried the web version & like it. I especially like the sound files you are using, very natural sounding unlike many of your competitors.

A small suggestion, why not have a "randomise" option for switching through various combinations of contratiempo, palmas, cajon etc switches? It should be quite easy to implement and would take you a little bit closer to a Dr Compas level variation generation.

Alternatively, you could have a sequencer / looper where the user can map out a sequence of when these various switches are turned on and off. The interface could just be a simple matrix of check boxes, 1 column for each compas, one row for each toggle option. This would allow the user to use you metronome to map out whole sections of songs.

Final suggestion, once the user has set up the metronome to generate what they like how about an option that they convert into a mp3 for practising with their iPod when away from their computer?

Muchas gracias por este metrónomo. It rocks!!!

@Dudnote : Thanks :) We recorded our own sounds. I recorded the cajon sounds yesterday with my own cajon and added it to the app tonight... And regarding the option you requested : I will have a look at Dr Compas.

Dr Compas has a crazy ability to improvise. I wasn't suggesting you try to go so far, but if you could you would attract a huge following for sure - I believe Dr. Compas is also quite popular at dance schools.

Hi Oliver,

Thank you for your notice about your new flamenco metronome!

I have downloaded it through GooglePlay and it is now available on
my laptop and tablet. Love it, works great!

(Unable to download to my Samsung phone, but I always have
my tablet with me ,so no problem!)

Last year I checked with Dr. Compas, they do not have an android edition and
no plans for one as of that time.

I will be following the thread for your updates as you expand the app.

Best wishes!

Oh and for those looking for the app who find only Compass applications, type "flamenco metronome". Our app is in the results for that search query.

By the way, the app's icon will change very soon.

Thanks for the positive feedback !

@El Kiko : on your mobile, the Google Play app only shows the apps which are compatible with your device. If you don't see it, I think it means you have Android < 5.0.0 so you can't install the app.

Here is a page which explains you how to check which version of Android you have :
http://www.wikihow.com/Check-What-Android-Version-You-Have

I know we'll have less app users because we require Android >= 5.0.0 and I'm sorry about this, but 1) the website (http://acompas.audio) works fine in Chrome/Firefox on Android devices 2) That's the best we can do to only have one source code to maintain. The Android app is made using the Cordova framework, and it's exactly the same code as when you use the website.

The only thing you lose if you use the website instead of the mobile app is that an internet connection is required.

By the way, the project is Open Source. The source code can be found on github (see the link at the bottom of the website).

Thank you very much for this - very cool app and sounds great. It works fine on my LG G2 with android 5.02

One suggestion for an update: please make the tempo slider also allow you to type in a number for the bpm. As it is, it's very difficult to slide to an exact tempo (such as 120 bpm) without overshooting or undershooting.

Thanks again for your generosity in making and providing this!

@Jgtr07 : good suggestion. Will work on it.

Right now, there are some performance issues that I'm fixing. The bars animation eats too much resources. This should be fixed shortly.

A friend of mine told me about a way to get the mobile app working with Android 4.x. I will work on it ASAP. Stay tuned.

Here is the project that could make it happen :

I give Dr. Compás a big dislike! For learning compás I don´t need a rhythm machine that randomizes the rhythmical process e. g. by changing speed or palmas sordas to fuertes. During the learning process I need a compás that stands strictly "in line" and exclusively does what it should do in a authentical situation such in a juerga. No palmeros/percussionists ever start to randomize independently refering to the guitarist. For this reason my warmest recomendation is Flamenco Compás Builder by Herbert Dapper. It has several options, too, that Dr. Compás for sure can dream of.

I think arguing pros and cons of potty training metronomes is just splitting hairs. As long as they keep a beat it's all good (or not if YOU can't keep a beat anyway).
