Wittner Pegs

Has anyone ever used Wittner pegs for a guitar? They look similar to Knilling pegs which I have seen used for guitars.

http://www.jhs.co.uk/wittnerfinetunepegs.html

The ratio for their tuners is 1:8.5, while other geared pegs are 1:4 and they seem fairly well priced. I've seen them on sale for around £90 for a set of six.

Could they be used for a guitar?

No, the section that rotates and has the string holes is in the wrong place for protruding through a guitar peghead.

Why can't a guitar with the cuts for machine heads be fitted with pegs? The holes would have to be drilled differently to accomodate the conical shape but other than that... why not?

Yes, they can. Here is a guitar with Knilling pegs

Yeah, that's what I was looking for... minus the unecessary headstock curves :p

the website above does not include viola pegs which would probably be the best fit. the violin pegs may be too short and the cello pegs may be too large.

wayne--my post should have been more clear--the website in the original post did not include viola pegs but wittner does sell viola pegs--thanks for clarifying.

Bob Benedetto made a model that incorporates this idea and it is quite nice looking to me. I'd not hesitate to make something like that. But I would use Pegheds tuners.

looking at the photos it seems one could retro fit mechanical pegs ( non-guitar pegheads or wittners) into an existing guitar without too many problems--maple plugs and re-drilling to fit the mechanical peg. i suspect flamenco pegheads would probably not work considering where the string hole is located but a violin or viola peg would work nicely.
