Amplifier and loop pedal - Need help...

Hello dear forumites!

My girlfriend told me today that she is going to buy me a small amplifier and a loop pedal as a gift =)

I have never used pedals or amplifiers before so I have no idea where to start.

Is there anyone here who knows about this and can recommend me something?

My guitar already has a plug-in and pre-amp.

Sure, get the ditto looper, it's only about $120. I got one a few months ago and use it at gigs. Simple, no-frills, good sound, and lots of fun. I'm just about getting ready to play with mine now. http://www.tcelectronic.com/ditto-looper/

Haven't been in the acoustic guitar amp market for a while now. If you can get an AER, those work quite well.

Roland AC 33.....has a looper built in. About 40 seconds of loop time I think.

They are a good little amp......small,portable,looper onboard and you can run them on mains or battery!!
I'm going to get one when they also manage to engineer it turning into a six pack and a roast beef sandwich after midnight!!

Miguel! Can you tell me a little about the pedal? How is it to use? Which features and possibilities does it hold?

a 40 second built in loop is not what I am looking for, I need at least a pedal, sevreal tracks and option to store. This is going to be my new buddy since we have moved out of the city I don't have anybody to jam with anymore =)

If you are after a lot of functions then you may need to look at what each pedal manufacturer is able to bring to the table....get your hands on them in a store somewhere.
My personal choice when i recently took the plunge ,was an AER alpha plus amp ....superb and uncoloured amplified sound for all acoustic guitars and a Roland rc30 looper(save able tracks,effects,onboard basic drum rhythms) which have recently come down in price in UK where I am. The only drawback at retail is needing deeper pockets!! But if your not paying then?
The reason I suggested the ac33 was for all it offers and a great price point.....just a suggestion from what you originally posted. I have worked in musical instrument retail for 20 odd years and have to say that you will be best served trying to get to a store which stocks a range to try. All of this is subjective of course.... like buying a guitar!!
Anyway, good luck with it.

That is seriously tempting. Rave reviews too.

Would you mind explaining what you use it for at gigs? I'm guessing knocking out a rumba rhythm chord sequence then soloing over the top, but what else?

Is there a limit to the length of the actual loop you record?

I'm sorry, the Ditto is probably not what you are looking for. It is a bare bones minimum device. Only one button, no persistent memory, no ability to download or save tracks, no quantization. It really is a basic looper--you make a loop and can layer on as many as you want. The recording length is I think 90 seconds (?) but I have never butted up against it or even close.

I have always been against using tech at gigs, so this represented a big concession to me. I wanted to keep it pure as possible. I generally just use it for rumbas, laying down a vamp of a few bars and just improvising over it. I never even do multiple loops except when I'm practicing at home and my daughter wants to come and make funny noises with it!

The very simplicity of the unit does encourage musicianship and creativity. One thing is that because it only has one button, to stop the loop, you have to double tap. It's a skill that has to be practiced! I have thought seriously about upgrading to the Boomerang so that I can have a "verse" loop and a "chorus" loop for more complex songs.

For your needs, I think the Digitech Jamman Stereo might be better. It has a lot of features, can hold hours of CD quality jam tracks, has permanent storage, as well as being able to loop competently.

...I didn't mention wanting any of those things. A no frills looper sounds like fun, providing it can sample sufficiently long loops and 90 sec is way more than sufficient.

(reading back maybe it was my use of the work 'record'? Sample is probably better, though I realise its all on the fly.)
