Hannabach "Buleria" Strings

So I just set my Navarro student blanca (pegs) up with some Hannabach Buleria strings in "high tension", and figured I'd do a quick review.

The packaging is modest, and the strings come in two envelopes- one for basses, one for trebles. The strings are unmarked, so you need to look hard to tell which string is actually which. It's not too difficult but a label on each would be less tedious, especially at this price.

Strung up, the first thing you'll notice are the intense basses. Extremely crisp, almost brittle, at least to my ear. Verging on steel-string like punch. This may or may not be a problem depending on your preferences, and your guitar.

The second thing you'll notice is that the trebles are quite quiet- unless played very hard. P-I-M-A-M-I arpeggios, with a thumb on any bass string, leaves the trebles in the shadows with the booming A or D string dominating more than it should.

My guitar is set up with 2.6mm action on the E and 2.0mm on the e. Overall, they don't do any better than the Felipe Conde Hard Tensions I had on previously, and cost 20% more.

In Summary:

PROS
+ Strong, clear basses
+ Plays well on low-action setups, allowing more precise "buzz" for a very flamenco sound on apuyando or alzapua.

CONS
- Strong, clear basses (As I said, may or may not be a selling point. For me, it's too much)
- Unremarkable, dead trebles. Easily find better trebles in cheaper sets.
- Price ($18)

I give these a 6/10. Won't buy again.

That must be the problem- Trying to play Solea on Buleria strings. I'm sure Ruben would have something to say about that.

On hannabach strings
Apparently They will discontinue production of the 827 mt ( black trebles )
To many production faults ( the trebles fray ) and poor sales ..

So assuming the info is correct
Received a circular email encouraged to write to hannabach not to discontinue the product
I don't use them so no personal issue
When they didn't fall apart ( possible light/heat exposure? ) they were a nice sounding treble string

AlVal--Do you mean Hannabach is discontinuing the 828? The 827 have the "peach" colored trebles and this product has been around for quite some time. The 828's have black trebles. I wonder how many people actually use the "flamenco" series of strings--826, 827 and 828. Here in the states they are pretty expensive. I tried the 827's in the past and found the strings to be very bright and stiff.

I have one pack of the bulerias 828 strings from back when they were much cheaper. I need to try them someday. There's no way I'd buy them again at $17 a pack or whatever they are going for now.

I recently decided to try the black 828 trebles for the first time, and the G string has already started to fray. They are nice sounding, but I didn't notice any major improvement over the LaBella 820B black trebles I always use (which are cheaper anyway). I'm switching back.

Agree about the trebles being dull. They don't project well compared to most brands.

One other thing concerning the basses. They break within a few months.

A little off topic (maybe perpendicular)...

The Dynacore basses (D'addario) are for sure the most long lasting strings I've ever played. I just clean them after playing and they're still ok. I've had to change the A string (was already short from moving it around) and the new A string sounded like the old Dynacores. Maybe it's because of the guitar but.. my 2 cents

The trebles on this set are nice but not for guitar playing, at least the normal tension ones... they're soooo soft that it's really easy to throw the high E out of the fingerboard while doing VA stuff. Doesn't happen with normal tension Pro Arte.
