The Granada School of Guitar-makers

Last week the book that I have been working on for three years was finally published. The following page will inform you as to when it is available near you. http://www.granadaexpert.com/johnray/book-the-granada-school-of-guitar-makers/ For now only in Spain. If you are interested, ask your sheet music dealer to look into it. No one involved in the publishing is interested in sending out single copies nor will we be making any money on that. The only way to get it to you is to get it to everyone (a good distribution network). The official presentation was a big hit as it included an exhibition of guitars, tools used by Benito Ferrer and Manuel de la Chica, documents from the history of Granada's guitar-makers and a few workshop goodies. It was attended by almost all of the makers in Granada and wrapped up with a concert by two local guitarists. This video was made for the presentation and was first shown there. It has been on youtube for a few days now but has only today been subtitled into English.

Thank you.
I need to read up on the difference of the different schools.
Are there similar schools with luthiers outside of spain?

I received a copy of the book today.
I've quickly looked through it and it appears to be very well done. Hardcover, good photos, nice quality paper, etc.
I'll spend some more time with it tomorrow.

I'm in the US and ordered it through Amazon (USA). $56.80 plus $3.99 shipping. A bargain.
Shipped from Spain. Took about two weeks to arrive.

availability of this book (in reply to johnguitar

Here is a list of countries or regions where this book is available:

Spain: Almost any bookshop can get it, you might need the name “La escuela granadina de guitarreros” and the ISBN 978-84-7807-537-9 I am happy to see it in the Librería Central, Casa del Libro, El Flamenco Vive and the bookshops of some of the major Spanish tourist attractions. I am still working on El Corte Inglés.

Europe in General: Haus der Musik Trekel, they tend to be present at Guitar Festivals.

France: La Guitarrería in Paris. Remind them that they can get it from the Piles catalogue.

Germany, Switzerland and Austria: Ask your sheet music dealer to order it from Grahl & Nicklas

Italy: La Stanza della Musica in Rome. Remind them that they can get it from Piles.

Japan: Aura Guitar Shop in Tokyo

China: Jitamen

Latin America: Ask your sheet music dealer to order it from Piles LA in Bogotá.

The North American distributor will be taking orders by the end of this week. I have refrained from mentioning the route that Charles Vega took (although I am very glad he did and hope he will share his thoughts on the book) because I want to see the book in shops where people can be drawn to it. The distributor will take care of that since I have finally found one that is wiling to stand up to that online bookshop.

I am pleased to announce that the provincial government of Granada now has a distributor for this book in the U.S. Please see here http://www.granadaexpert.com/johnray/get-your-copy-now/ the list of music stores which have been informed as to where to get this book wholesale. I believe it is also in the library catalogues so go out there and order it for your public library too!

John Ray's book is not available in the UK.
But there is a book with the same title available from Amazon uk
http://www.amazon.co.uk/escuela-granadina-guitarreros-Granada-guitar-makers/dp/8478075372/ref=la_B00JQO42ZU_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1405409012&sr=1-2

The authors are Angelo Gilardino, and David Gansz, I think. And it appears to have been published in May this year?

All rather confusing. Can someone explain?

Hi Kevin, yes same book. This is one of the reasons that I dislike Amazon. Someone put up their own copy (a gift to them from the publisher) of this book on Amazon.co.uk the morning after the presentation. The information that this idiot submitted became the official info on Amazon. It even says paperback! It is important to me and the other Granada makers that this book get out to proper bookshops and on shelves where people can see it so I am resisting having Amazon uk be the place to get it. Tomorrow the shipment to the English distributor should go out so by the end of the week you should be able to get it from guitar dealers and music shops in the UK. Authors are Angelo Gilardino, Alberto Cuéllar, Aarón García, Javier Molina and David Gansz. I am the editor and did no writing whatsoever. I have been talking everyone's ear off about this book for the three years I spent working on it so for people to call it MY book is natural.

Indeed, a database is only as good as the cataloguing of its individual records, and Amazon's "authority" controls leave much to be desired.

The U.S. Amazon site copied the U.K. site's misinformation.

As one of the book's authors, I jumped through all of the Amazon hoops and provided them with accurate information with which to revise their listing. They rejected all of my additions and corrections, citing "insufficient evidence."

So I jumped through all of the same hoops again, this time providing them with scans of the title page, table of contents, etc. Again, they rejected the updates saying I had supplied insufficient evidence(!!!!).

At that point I went ballistic and spent literally half a work-day trying to get somebody on the telephone at Amazon. Not an easy task! When I finally got a live human being in a position of authority, I read him the riot act and demamded satisfaction.

Well, they made most of the changes, but still don't list John Ray as the Editor and, last I looked, still have it listed as a paperback.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/escuela-Granadina-guitarreros-The-Granada-Guitar-makers/dp/8478075372

It's tough enough assuring accurate information makes it into print, let alone having to deal with the WalMart of the bookselling world distributing inaccurate and faulty product descriptions, then insisting they're right.

Please do pursue a copy via your local, friendly, 'neighborhood' music store.

Cheers,

David

There used to be supplies that were considered and treated specially, because of counting to primare needs and thus being protected to a degree from arbitrary marketing and profiteering. Those were sections like food, housing, health care and education, and with the last item books that used to be subsidized and fairly available and affordable.

Past decades of predator capitalism and corruption has had all this go to hell. Books, often times even just paper backs, despite of todays comfortable production methods are outrageously expensive, with usually only some ridiculous share of the margin left to the authors.

And on top of it common distribution majors treat the authors like a POS.

Mine acted against my will, by publishing a detail explicitely asked for to NOT do so, and since then does nothing to repair. Instead replying in a cynically kind of style that these days seems to have become standard anyway with major companies treatment of their underdogs and end consumer.

And in the practical contrary of lofty disregard of ants wishes there are employed hosts of people / more than enough staff for to delegate a couple heads to correcting hoax or misconceptions like mentioned in this thread. Easily.

It should be no problem at all to decently respond to correcting inquiries, but all the excessive profiteering has proven to be completely unproductive in terms of sophisticating, with oligarchs and their entourage yet displaying all attitude of primitive and perfidious being.
All the privileg unable of producing satisfaction and emotional balance, but still just dwarfs who need to magnify the underprivileged being of surrounding people in order to feel elitist themselves.

The advance of cynism in the industries shows what happens when low-brows become leaders.

Where I am typicallly the sophisticated belong to the lower middle class and to the poor, whereas those who have become literally insanely rich usually are uneducated ( regarding both, emotion and ratio).
And while this is based on local, traditional whereabouts; my impression is as if the same principle was spreading globally.

Fools and emotional autists as perfect heads in oligarchy and plutocracy.

I was at the Guild of American Luthiers convention in Tacoma last week and had a great time. Highlights were meeting some of the greats of american guitarmaking, seeing a lot of interest in the Granada book (all the copies available sold quickly) and flamenco night was incredible! I met a guy from Victoria, B.C. who plays a bit and builds a bit and then that night I heard him singing. WOW! So I find out that there is this vibrant flamenco scene in Victoria and they really know what they are doing. I guess I am being small-minded but I really didn't expect that. And of course a couple of the makers that came to building through playing flamenco were playing and were amazing too.

RE: The Granada School of Guitar-makers (in reply to johnguitar

The book misses a few and most relevant families, there are some guitar makers who make no guitars and highlights guitar constructors that do not even belong to this school not to say about contact mistakes, missing information on real Granada guitarmakers' merits; plenty full of particular interests. Ganz is great and faithfull when he says that the clue about Granada Guitarmakers is "Family bonds". The book deals more about guitar makers established in Granada and the romanticism of this profession from thier point of view than on the real Granada School of Guitarmakers.

If you look for a true and faithful research, free from any particular interest, a serious research you can fiind it on the Spanish Cultural Magazine "Revista Calle Elvira" number "Decir Flamenco" "Una ventana al mundo de la Guitarra de Granada. Granada la ciudad de los guitarreros ". Granada guitarmaking is not just a business from people who established themselves in our city looking for the romanticism of this profession and for a way of living and trying to get introduced in this world...further more, it is a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages, a family profession recently declared intangible heritage of Andalucia.

Wow, somebody sure has an axe to grind! Anyone who has read this book will disagree as I do with the statements made by Mr. Gil. Speaking of books about Granada - look what I scored the other day. First edition! This will be for the Granada museum of the guitar. The 3rd edition is hard enough to find but this one seemed impossible until now. Eusebio Rioja wrote the only other book on the Granada guitar-makers back in 1976.

RE: The Granada School of Guitar-makers (in reply to johnguitar

I liked the book and found the post of mr. Gil a little ungenerous, (particularly as posted in this thread).
Nonetheless I must admit that I myself (loving Granada: I never had the courage to tell my wife that we had our honeymoon down there to buy a guitar from Granada ) found a little frustrating some editing choices and the lack of some essential infos (both in the catalog and the guitar making techniques).
I wouldn't like to be misunderstood as I really appreciated your passionate work and the final result.
It's just that I had great expectations and found out that the book ended up as a compromise because of the people involved and being the book sponsored by the Granada Council.
I found few things about De La Chica, no serious insight about the meeting Bouchet/Marin Montero, no mentions about the different paths taken by the major luthiers down there (for instance the Bellido brothers), no mention of the business of Ferrer in Cuesta de Gomeres and what this entailed and eventually what makes the guitars made in Granada so special.
At the end it's not a book for luthiers either: you can find more lutherie infos about the Granada way by reading the American Lutherie edition with René Baarslag and by visiting your nice blog...

John, why don't you publish a book about your own path as a Granada builder or your meeting with your teacher?
