Flamenco will never be the same nor the world of music without him with us. I've always considered him the best musician of all time.

though Paco was never my favourite tocaor , nor was Camarón my favourite cantaor.

thanks for the information

That's incredibly sad, I am devastated... Felt it was coming for some time now, had that heavy feeling looking at his latest videos. And now it's true... What will flamenco become now?

Paco de Lucía has died in México at 66

Paco de Lucía has died in México at 66. Different sources confirm that the guitarist may have suffered a heart stroke while he was with his family in a beach near his residence. The musician, born in Algeciras (Cádiz) leave us being the maximum international reference of flamenco. The artist's career has been recognized with many awards, such as Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes (2004), two Latin Grammy (2004 and 2012), Doctor Honoris Causa of the Berklee College of Music, the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1992) or the Distinción Honorífica de los Premios de la Música (2002). Paco de Lucía revolutioned flamenco guitar in the 70's with the albums 'Fuente y caudal', 'Almoraima' and 'Entre dos aguas', these recordings are part of an extensive 'Integral' of 27 tittles. A rupture that was started hand to hand with Camarón and that became a international phenomenon. The guitarist shared stages, concerts and life with such jazz masters as Chick Corea, Al di Meola or John McLaughlin. His concerts were also the main atraction in jazz festivals. After the intense 2013 tour, that followed is last live recording 'En vivo', Paco de Lucía was working in his new album.

Paco de Lucia (1947-2014). May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family.
I first saw him play way back in 1981 in Pittsburgh, when he was touring with John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola. He inspired me then. What a tremendous talent, enormously gifted, and who played amazing music for millions over the years. A sad day but his music is still here, as is the inspiration.

Oh man! Just reading this now! Only moments after I found the Zyryab-CD in my mailbox. Just in the process of expanding my modest PdL-collection. I'll play it in his honour tonight.

This is really sad news. Yet, what a legacy. He really lived for music - for flamenco. Now, el Camaron finally has his long-time tocaor back, bet they'll be throwing a party.

So many memories of being with Paco. Just me and him rolling down the freeway, him doing all the talking with his guitar. Back in 1985, I bought a new firebird, and put the fuente cassette in and drove to Mariano Cordoba's house for a lesson. Mariano came out to look at my new car, t tops off, blasting los pinares. He got a huge smile on his face and asked " Who's playing?" PACO y RAMON! We are having a drought here in California this year-it really hasn't rained for a year but it's raining today in the Bay Area. Feels appropriate. I think many of us could write many pages about PdL and
what he meant to us. One mark of a superstar is that they are known by only one name. There are and have been many great flamencos named Paco, but there is only one Paco.

THe greatest guitarist that ever lived. Every note the man played was gold to me. His playing and his world of flamenco that he lured me into filled a huge void in my life right after my father died when I was 17. This is about the saddest day I have had since then. rest in peace maestro.

I feel the same way. Have not been this sad since the passing of my Father. Although I did not know the Maestro on a personal level, his music surely touched me on a personal level. When I'm in the shop, his music is on a lot and I feed off the inspiration it gives me. I feel very privileged and honored to have gotten the opportunity to see him in concert twice. Those has been the only times I have personally been in the presence of greatness and I got to do it twice.

I read he suffered a heart attack at the beach playing with his children and other family members. My heart goes out to his family. I take comfort knowing the Maestro's last moments were spent with family in a placed he loved.

Me too, without even aware of why. Just feeling like: "Thanks goodness, he is still there!" whenever recent events of his were mentioned in the past years.

Like for fellow pals here, it is still coming to me. Something breaking off.

You can´t say that his passing was being neglected in German news, despite of the special genre.
The online paper I am reading notes it diversely, including a dedicated article about his vita.
And there just was a footage on main news in the TV-channel ZDF. ( With one of the anchormen making a silly face, indicating how much he knew about it. Interestingly his female colleague in contrast appeared as if she knew well what she was announcing there.)

None of such attention was there for J.J. Cale a while ago. ( Who in his life fled medial attention, besides.)
Also todays info about Bill Haley´s guitarist Franny Beecher passing at 92 went hardly noticed in the media. - Before possible pointers: Not nearly as influential for his corresponding genre, I know.

I just heard a wonderful tribute to Paco on National Public Radio. It was originally broadcast in 2004. A great loss.

This is a very sad day. When Moraito died I felt sad, and again when Morente died, but the death of Paco feels like losing an old friend, which of course is true, in a way.

Paco sang with his guitar with perfect technique and profound soul. The same soul you can hear in his vocals on the end of "Camaron" on Luzía.

Who will sing a beautiful, soulful song for Paco?

Terribly sad... Last year I managed to see him live for the first time ... I had been thinking he was getting old should travel somewhere and see him live before he retired ... But this way ... So unfair. His music led me to learn the guitar ... :-(

That's the only concert I have felt my blood rushing from the start... So excited... This feeling of wanting to cry of happiness. I've liked many other concerts but i had never had that feeling of ... right this is what lifes about ... about happiness, about sharing ...

My condolences to his close family and friends,
He will live on until the end of the universe and beyond !

So sad. Hard to comprehend how much he changed Flamenco, music and peoples lives.
I for one would probably not have got so into Flamenco, travelled through Spain, learnt Spanish,
made new friends without his influence. Crazy. RIP Paco

His "Soniquete" made my day this morning while driving in my car. Was hardly able to do my shoppings half an hour ago when I heard it. On my way home I listened to his "Tio Sabas". Even more intense then before. R.I.P. Maestro

RIP Maestro! Hard to believe...

He inspired me to pick up the flamenco guitar in the late 90's when living in Barcelona - got to see him play with his group. Although I rarely play flamenco these days, I still listen to him regularly. I will miss his performances but he will live on through his music. A sad day.

According to BBC News, Paco de Lucia died in Mexico, in the resort town of Cancun. The BBC reports that he died of a heart attack while playing with his children on the beach. (Paco's wife is from Mexico.) He was only 66 years old, still relatively young, with plenty of good years left in him.

The BBC says Cancun, another source says Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is a smaller, more authentically Mexican town on the coast a little to the south of the concrete internationalism of Cancun.

Vaya con Dios, Paco. You gave our lives more meaning.

If anyone deserves the "rest" part of RIP, it's Paco. A lifetime of battle with that guitar. The touring, recording..the never ending work.
And we all benefit from his sacrifice.
I hope it was good for you too Paco.
