Tis the nature of the query.

The closer it is to firewood the more skill required to turn it into a facsimile of its former self.

Nice business. Mike spends five dollars and someone else accumulates, over a lifetime, the knowledge to make Mike's lottery win.

But without an official okeydoke he's looking at a four figure investment with a blind hand.

What's a thrift shop? Is it a charity? Will they get a percentage, or if someone here gives you a d i c k-free answer, is the loot all yours? Is there a D i c k d o m scale? And where liest thou upon it?

This is not the same as asking about compas or fakemenco. His assumptions are without humility.

I believe this is the Chica that Pink and Arash owned. If so then Mike is rich. Given the correct aromatic profile of the neck angle, I'd stake my reputation on it.

Mike, does the neck smell like poopoo? This question takes us to the heart of the matter.

It is traditional and accepted here at the foro to start with an introductory post so the members can get to know you a little bit. It's not often that people jump right in as you have, and that's perfectly acceptable. We just aren't used to people coming on strong right away! Welcome.

There is also a little bit of skepticism. The all caps lock intro really threw me off for certain. We occasionally get spammers who use that method...and have hed some historical crazy people do the same! I think when I read your posts I had already assumed a tone of pressured and driven as a result. That could have predisposed many to unfavorable opinions of you. Since this is the internet, that counts for more when we can't observe your body language. It is the source of many disputes on the foro.

All of this is immaterial now. You are here and you have a question that I think many of us would quite like to know the answer to. I know I do! What would be the best chance of you finding your answer is to zip over to the Lutherie section of the foro and post it there. I think you'll find that the majority of the luthiers will be willing to take a crack at it at least preliminarily from the pictures...and also offer some fresh sarcasm.

I will caution you though, there are many factors in determining authenticity and most will shy away from offering a definitive opinion without seeing it in person. The internet may be of limited use on this one I'm afraid.

Lastly, we are all a bunch of sarcastic dicks. We get really excited when something disrupts the status quo. It gives us a chance to flex our intellects (or lack there of) and come up with some yet unheard witticisms. After a time, if you decide to stay, you will come to appreciate and enjoy the absurdity of the foro and its members. I encourage you to browse the forum and read back in time some of the archived posts for context.

thank you . im starting to get it . I pretty much know what i got , just wanted some corroboration and reactions , ive been picking guitars , paintings , watches , for more 20 years , this is a rare bird , just wanted to know what other people thought of it. I will hang around and read more .. it wasnt my intention to rude or to offend any one.

cuban mike I'd be interested to hear more about your 20 years experience. If you'd care to share with us I think that might be a great subject for an introductory post from you!!

I LOVE manuel de la chica's guitars. They are my absolute favorites! I was really excited to see the name as the topic of the thread and I do hope what you have there is a winner. I'd be excited to see some updates on the progress of restoration!

Hi Cubanmike.

Did you check the inside of the guitar with a mirror?
Lot of builders sighn or stamp the underside (downside?) from the soundboard too.

this one has 2 ink stamps , today my son was telling me that he can actually see a faded small signature on the label , the year is very faded , is 57 , maybe the signature has faded away too . its all a big mistery , everything is consistent with a De Chica guitar , the top of the headstock ,the rossetta , the bridge ,etc. im sure is right , the question remains , how good is it , and how much will take to get it in playing shape.

There are and where a lot of guitar builders in Granada.

If you skip the internet prices and get in the real world. The guitar is not much worth in this situation.
Restored and playable it is still very old.
I think the price you can get for it if it is restored and in good condition is around 2000 euro, but do not look strainge if it is not sold for 1500 euro nowadays, and you have to go lower than that.

This is my personal oppinion, maybe useful for you if you consider the amount of money you want to put into this guitar.

I played for a couple of years with a guy who had a late 1950s Manuel de la Chica. I liked his guitar very much although it was not overly loud. Manuel was in competition with Casa Ferrer during his working life and he established the better reputation.

As a general rule, if a guitar is not signed it was not made by the maker whose name appears on the label. I am interested to hear that you think that you might have found a faint signature. Manuel liked to ring the changes on the ink colour when he signed his labels. I have seen red, bright blue, dark blue, black and green. I suppose it is possible that he used an ink that has faded badly on your guitar. However his signature was not small (as you say about what you have found) but expansive covering a big area on the label. You can find plenty of examples on the web.

At worst you have an “interesting” guitar. You could diminish its value by heavy restoration. My advice is to do what is necessary to make it sound and playable.

Your reaction to my previous post is quite unfortunate. Perhaps I was a bit strong and blunt (but not obscene) about asking you to contribute to our flamenco community. I still hope that you will try to do so. And, I also hope that you will do so with more respect and decorum.

You might consider calling Dan of Dan Zeff guitars. He is in Chatsworth so, not far from you. He is likely the best source of info on classical/flamenco guitars on the west coast.
google it...

Hi Rob , i was carefully reading one of the 2 ink stamps inside the guitar it reads the same as the labels , but i believe i read his name Manuel De La Chica Garcia , what you make of that. ?

Of course we all know that any guitar, or anything else for that matter, is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it but some people apparently have some rather grandiose ideas about what this amount should be.
Guitar Salon International currently lists a 1969 de la Chica classical, signed and dated, with mahogany back and sides in their inventory. It's supposedly in excellent condition. Their asking price is a mere $11,000.

At that price I think it they'll have it for a while.

"De la Chica" and "Garcia" are family names. It is the tradition in Spain to use the name of your mother and father. It used to be the father's name first but that is not always the case these days. Sometimes people just use one of their names - for examples Manual Lopez Bellido has at different times had labels reading "Manual Bellido", "Manual L Bellido" and "Manual Lopez Bellido".

So while I do not know for sure that Garcia was the name of one of de la Chica's parents, it is the most obvious reason.

I take it that you're referring to Manuel Lopez Bellido?

The convention in Spain is to use the paternal surname first and the maternal surname second. In de la Chica's case, Garcia would have been his mother's maiden name.
Some guitar makers chose the maternal name for their labels like Manuel G. (Gonzalez) Contreras and Ignacio M. (Manzano) Rozas.
Contreras used "M.G. Contreras", "Manuel G. Contreras" and "Manuel Contreras" on his labels. Rozas always stuck with Ignacio M. Rozas. There are numerous other examples.

Yeah - sorry for dodgy spelling - it's late here!
There was a proposal couple of years ago to change the law in Spain for registered names allowing a choice of order. I don't know if it was ever agreed.

Good news . Guitar is authentic as i suspected , the Luthier i talked to was a personal friend of manuel de la Chica , he examine the guitar for a good 10 to 15 minutes with a mirror inside etc, , needs about $300.00 of restoration , and i guess the sound after that will determine price . He was really happy to be able to work on it .

hi thank you all for the explanations on the Garcia last name thing , i was born in Cuba myself and lived in spain i have 2 last names as well i knew that , i thought that it could have been that there was a father and son or something like that . I talked the Luthier who knew him today and he corroborated that his second last name was indeed Garcia . Mistery solved .. The guitar should ready some time in January . Ill post some pictures . Thanks for all the help , an d sorry for some of the miss understanding that went on at the begining.

Truth is I like it when such questions are discussed. Interesting stuff.

Seems very cheap for the luthier's contribution. I guess there are different levels of restoration.

Good job though. Better this than trashed.

Why not take it to the CIA and tell them Bin Laden played it back when he was a rumbero?

They'll get the whole lineage for you and add a bundle to the value.

Recently it seems that previous owners can inflate the value wildly.

Got really lucky . Dont want to mention the name of luthier here becauze of the circus atmophere we enjoy here , but verywell known guy and personal friend of de la chica.. This guy actually got emotional when he saw the guitar. I will post more when i get it back in about a month. I will probably use it to play cuban music
