Ab9sus4 no?

yes!

quote:

Since you are insisting it is not any kind of Ab chord. It is an A chord. You could write it like this Asus(b9). But whenever you write say Dflat people will think you mean well Dflat.

oh, I see what you mean, we have been writing Ab9 meaning "A with a b9" and you have been reading "Ab with a 9" because we should have been writing A add b9 I guess....

honestly in practise it doesn't come up as a problem very often 'cos if I am talking to a guitar buddy we are talking about accompanying tangos or bulerías or something so the assumed context is that it's an A chord so flat9 means an added flat9.

Precisely why I ignored it in the first instance. With hilarious consequences.

can't play it 'cos I only got 4 fingers, but if I had 5 and could play it would surely be Fmaj9?

Surely eh.

So we are in F and we want to kick off in first inversion.

Well I guess I forgot to assume that.

And I guess I must have an extra finger.

Well I sure am learning a lot.

Index finger is barreing 5th fret and 6th fret at the same time Like this "/"
Then the crazy stretches of course.
And then comes the crazy part ... the open E string. Arching the index at the bottom in a way where it lets the E string open.
its not possible with acoustic guitar and "normal" fingers.
But ...

well, I don't have a classical guitar degree, and I don't play in jazz bands, so I only have the theory I have auto-didactically acquired from dipping into the theory of those styles while playing flamenco. So I am looking for the simplest name for a chord, and I am coming at it from a flamenco context. It would not occur to me to name a chord "alt" something when there is a simpler solution like maj9.

ok, so you changed the fingering. I assumed the "challenge" was to play the chord fingered as Arash posted it. If you're gonna change the fingering and order of notes you could just play it like this (half bar on 3rd fret of strings 6, 5, & 4);

0
6 (4th finger)
0
3 (1st finger bar)
3 (1st finger bar)
5 (2nd finger)

quote:

Surely eh.

I hope for your sake you are not really as bitter and twisted as your constant sarcasm suggests you are.

RE: What chord is this????? (in reply to mark indigo

yeah the fun part was to find out how to play the impossible chord with the posted tab.

no hard feelings.

the version of guitarbuddha is also quite hard to play clean with the barred pinky.

you could also cheat for instance and get the exact same sound as in the video playing this:

0
8 - 6 (pull off ;-)
5
3
0
X

Problem is, it only works arpeggiated lol

Me too ! But some days.....

In my defense I was quite chuffed to have solved the problem three minutes after Arash set it. Two and a half hours later you responded with what seemed like a blanket contradiction.

But that doesn't matter at all. I shouldn't take myself so seriously. And if this kind of thing happens a lot to me then I should take more steps to avoid it.

And Fmaj7 is perfectly valid. It is a surprise just how tense and far away from a feeling of resolution a first inversion major seveth chord is given that it is supposed to feel like the one according to some textbooks. Doesn't matter when the voicing is high but with that low an in the bass register it matters.

I said it was an Aalt to reinforce the point that no chord of any complexity can be named definitively in terms of its function without access to the rest of the progression, its position within the progression and preferably the melody.

I'm not sitting in front of the foro on screen all day waiting for new posts, and rarely look at the time posts were made, so I wasn't aware of the time gaps between your post and mine, and hadn't intended to shoot you down in your moment of feeling chuffed with yourself.
