Luthiers Share Tool Ideas

I came up with this scraper blade holder this week. Just bumped it together with what ever was paying around. I like that the slots are vertical. I tapered the body of the holder so small blades at the top would not get buried in deep slots.

I guess since this is a guitar making section we should talk about guitar making.

A new go-bar deck made of cheap stuff and found wood. It's quite solid without any sheer movement.

Great idea for a thread
Here's a simple one.
I precut all my fretwire to near final width and undercut the tang ends even on unbound fretboards so this is essential for organizing

I just assumed you would have shipped the whole workshop out with you to Japan.

Anyway, I like the simplicity of the new one; no metal parts, except screws..

Here's a simple jig I'm sure most of you already have. It speeds up making the scarf joint enormously.

I suppose it's stretching a bit to call this a tool but it's been a invaluable addition to our shop since I built it a few years ago. The drawers are 36" wide and very deep on full extension glides and are divided either front to back or side to side. It's used for storing neck and bridge blanks, bracing, tuners, small tools, sandpaper, etc.

I wanted one of those Hitachi saws for years but just couldn't bring myself to spend the money. On top of the initial price it comes underpowered so you have to kick in several hundred more to put a proper motor on it. I found this one used for less than half the price of new and it had the bonus of a Baldor 3hp motor (220v 30amps). Used ones are really scarce, it's the only used I've ever seen within driving distance.

My crescents were crap, but now they're plane to see. This is probably a variation on what should be the way, but I don't know it, so guessed.

Nice flush frame cabinet John! Likin the dove tail drawer boxes! I know how tough a cabinet can be to build, especially flush frames like that....

Sand paper sharpening is not a foul.

Get yourself a piece of thick flat glass, and some fine wet and dry papers. Put a few drops of dish soap in a glass of water, put the water on the glass and then put the sand paper on that wet glass. The surface tension from water will hold the paper in place. Wet the paper on the grit surface and work though progressively finer grades of paper with your blade holder jig until you create a razor edge. Strop on leather with rouge.

Actually, that is very interesting, the glass surface tension effect. I do try to finish off a blade on 1000 wet and dry and leather (with mixed results)- but you realise that I was not sharpening there but cutting the crescents on a bridge? Ham fisted but it seems to work.

Stephen, I like your scraper holder.

I also appreciate your sensitivity to the smaller scrapers. It is true that they can get buried in deeper slots. and that is just frustrating.

I use sand paper to grind my plane blades the same way. Except I went to the hardware store and bought a piece of granite tile to use instead of glass. Worked out pretty well!

This is the fret leveling file I use. It's a bastard file that I sawed the tang off of and glued it to a piece of poplar. I had of course dunked the poplar in nuclear waste prior to this so that it can never shrink or deform. It does sometimes spontaneously walk around on its own though....

Here is a ridiculous device I invented. it's called a pencil sharpener. more impressive is the sharpening jig I created consisting of a a piece of wood spring clamped to a desk.

I use this tool to sharpen pencils when I am drawing the body shape of a guitar. and also creating pointéd sticks. some of you may see the advantages of the pointéd stick.

I didn't wall mount it because that's no fun. See now I take it with me to whatever room I need it. My shop is in the basement, I sometimes work in the kitchen or the dining room. I do math and recording upstairs in the studio. And then there's the office.... Why wall mount a traveling pencil sharpener?
