RE: Cante - What's it all about? (in reply to Kate

quote:

ORIGINAL: Kate

I carry the stigma on my forehead
the people whisper I’m a sinner
while I search inside myself
and in my breast treachery cries out.
Don’t say that I’m ungrateful
that treachery does not wound me
they say some lovers kill
and other lovers die.
When they go by boat, the boatman tells me
the pretty girls don’t pay with money.

My interpretation/translation is that the girl has sinned by sleeping with her lover who has betrayed her. She is now stigmatised and even the boatman suggests she can pay for her trip without money.

Kate

I'm not a religious man, but I think cante is the only way through which we can get a glimpse of heaven.

Here's an absolutely beautiful letra (por fandangos de huelva). Brings tears to my eyes. Almost childishly naive. And sooo powerful.

Mis lágrimas voy echando
en un vaso de cristal
y ahora las echo en el suelo
por que de tanto llorar
el vaso lo tengo lleno

Quick translation....

My tears are falling
into a glass
and now I pour them on the floor
because with so much crying
my glass is full.

This is a Paco Toronjo letra. He sings it on the Saura Flamenco movie. I you have a few glasses of manzanilla beforehand, his rendition is likely to bring out more lágrimas!

There are lots por Huelva, eg.

De Gibraleon a Huelva
van los pasitos contaos
de Gibraleon a Huelva
si no fuera por el puente
pasaría el río a nao
¡Ay! serrana sólo por verte

From Gibraleon to Huelva
is only a short distance
were it not for the bridge
I would swim across the river
just to see you

Romanza

My copy of Paseo de los Castaños gives the following translation for the letras of Pa la Pimpi:

Beautiful voice I hear singing/ breaking its strength against infinity/
ask God how and why/ in the horizon all these cries are lost/
He sometimes cries and sings/ don´t tell him to go to sleep/
because you wound the child where it hurts the most

and this for the buleria:

Like rain water/ no one knows where it goes/
I keep it in this sweet source

It also translates the comment "Utiliza el pulgar y el rasgueado con la contundencia debida" as:

"He uses his thumb and twangs his guitar in a forceful way."

Most things sound better in Spanish.

Beautiful lyrics even in English (still no idea what they mean though!). Like poetry.
Thanks Andante.
