Maybe St. George didn't really kill that dragon after all.
Interesting — to me, anyway — discussion on his Wikipedia talk page about whether he’d been demoted (and later apparently re-promoted) by the Catholic church.
I remember reading something about that years ago, but apparently no one can find any supporting documentation (although of course, as someone points out there, most Englishman don’t care what the Pope says on the subject anyway).

I have to say, I have lived in several countries, and the British are the most friendly and tolerant, maybe this is down to the lack if patriotism and nationalism? If you think this is a bad thing come to the Balkans.

Wonder why we Limeys never seem to make such a big deal of it
could be 'cos St. George was adopted by the Norman aristocracy (around the time of the crusades) and the Anglo-Saxon peasants wanted nothing to do with it....
or could be 'cos the English people have historically been so oppressed by their (our) rulers that all sense of pride and/or resistance has been destroyed and they (we) have nothing to celebrate anymore....
or could be 'cos we are so embarassed by the history of our rulers leading us to crap on the neighbours that we don't want to celebrate our nationhood anymore....

Well; maybe it's a bit of all three, Mark.
But I still think we deserve a St. George's Day parade!
(Then you and I, and a few other Limey Foro members, can sit on a fancy float and play Sevillanas. . . live in hopes. . .)
