No they are fun to make, just not as fun to play

But I love the sound of a classical guitar in the hands of a good player and I'm looking forward to creating that again. Maybe a cedar top.

The thing about the B S is the smell comes from the bottom up !
The problems is when it goes all the way up to the Top of the world you find your self trapped in.......... ! !

One of the sad facts of this wonderful but varied world we are all living in.

Good luck to all music or arts related workers on this site .

It's no different for guitarists.

Just like there are a handful of builders that get to make only guitars they want, there are only a handful of guitarists that get to do whatever they want.

In this thread, and on this forum, the distinction has already been made between the hobbyist/amateur and the professional. So to be clear, what we're really discussing here is the life of the professional; the person that has (more or less) all their eggs in one basket. No need to debate things if includes those that choose to have a reliable paycheck made outside the realm of music, such that they can choose what to do and not do with music, since it doesn't require making a living in music.
Same for builders I imagine.

And personally, I totally respect that decision. Some of the greatest Brazilian choro musicians, who defined the genre and are considered genius musicians by every account, (Jacob do Bandolim, etc) made that decision throughout their career.

But fact is, the majority of musicians are asked to play ****ty gigs, deal with crappy clients/employers/bandleaders etc etc

And our services are just as superfluous as a luthier's when the economy goes to crap and people consider what is a "need" vs. a "want". The amount of paying work that musicians rely on to pay their rent is just a scant nowadays as the amount of clients wanting to throw down $4k on a guitar. In fact, it's probably better for luthiers, since as we know, there are many great guitarists who by day, collect a paycheck as an engineer, doctor, etc, and have the money for the guitars. But this is probably only true for the name luthiers.

All words connected to food has gone up. Meatball being the winner with twice as many hits now as before.
The index of ´porno´is now 3 times higher....

Meatballs and porn? Well, porn is what it is. It's not going anywhere. But I think the only reason people would be googling meatballs with that increase is because of the information society we live in. No one is watching meatball porn. They are using the internet to research meatball recipies. To improve. Or to make the best of a modest situation. To learn how to make kibbe..or know what a swedish meatball really is.

We have the internet to thank for glut of information people have access to. It is the internet we have to thank for this foro, and without the internet, none of us would be connected like we are..I certainly would never have heard of an Anders Eliason, Andy Culpepper or Ricardo Marlow.

It's sad that Jason isn't here any longer, because he's someone who took the situation at hand and got smart. He didn't change his obviously-not-latin name, didn't lament that people don't take as many guitar lessons, didn't let the smart phone obsessed world make him loose hope. He practiced till he was a mutherfucker, invested in himself and made a website, paid a big chunk of money to have his website search engine optimized, invested money and time into Dr. Compas.. He took all the negatives that effect us all and got creative with how to make them positives.

Let's just stay positive and get creative.
Or don't. Stay true to your cause, resist change, never compromise, and learn to live within your means. That can be cool too.

But whatever your life/career choice, it's yours; you make the choice.

I totally agree to both statements. And its the same story for everyone making something traditional or different than the main stream.. How many artesans are left. How many really good cabinet makers etc....
Most people doing something different than the mainstream are living more or less like in your second statement. Accepting that their lifestyle way of making money is a lot more troublesome when it come to income and safety.
If I wanted to make money, I should have gone mainstream and used my university carrer. But I didnt do so, because I dont funcion well in that world.

I just hope there will continue to be space for person not wanting to live the mainstream way. If not, this is going to be a VERY boring world and we are heading towards that.

Don't forget there's mainstream and mainstream:
One can opt out of the average 9 to 5 job with (reasonably) secure income etc.
But one can also opt out of the mainstream within that "standard" situation.
