Krazy Glue nails - how to get off

I recently made the switch from nail hardeners (Sally Hanson, etc) to Krazy Glue for some nail strengthening help.

But like all products, eventually it degrades to the point of needing to be removed and reapplied.

But how do you get it off?

I tried nail polish remover. Barely had an effect. I tried scraping it off, sanding it off.
Almost nothing is working.

It may be complicated by the fact that I embedded a thin strip of tissue paper on the tip of the fingernail.

Thanks for any help.

Maybe acetone and a rough emory board? Nail polish remover is like weak sauce acetone..

If it is still a strong bond just work over it and put more glue on it.

acetone all the way. acetone is a great solvent. just be sure to not have any flames or heat sources nearby while using it. you might just let it wear out on its' own.

for a product that might be a good alternative try "no more wraps". it is a formaldehyde free solution that has pulvarized kevlar which when laminated to one's nail will give it more strength as well as the needed flexibility (a non-flexible laminate can break when flexion is needed). the other positive--it is low sheen.

No joke, I had a stone sub-contractor getting a stain out of some granite and a rag drenched in acetone went up and it took forever to put out, there's no way to describe it other then an aggressive angry fire.

Acetone is the best stuff on earth though, works for everything......

DON'T REMOVE IT. It will flake off with dead skin cells
Soon if you don't want it. Otherwise keep what you got
and apply more on top of old.

Have you tried 100% pure acetone, or have you been using the stuff labeled as nail polish remover? Cuz that stuff takes forever to take CA off! The pure stuff is probably harder on your nails though. But it works much faster

Acetone is nasty.

The thing about taking them off by force is that it weakens the nail by ripping off layers of nail. Better to work over well glued tissue base and eventually as Ricardo says the nail with shed the glue nail naturally. Then start over.

You just rough up lightly with fine nail file, then flow new glue over it.

yeah, acetone is nasty but effective. i have found time usually does the trick but acetone helps the process. besides keeping acetone away from heat sources do not use stryofoam as a container to hold enough to soak your finger--acetone goes through it like it is not there. pretty cool to watch though.

Jesus H Christ, don't soak your fingers in acetone. That is really not good for you.

Soaking your fingers in acetone is not a good idea, just saying. It should not become a practice for guitarists to follow as routine for Cyanoacrylate ( Crazy glue) nail repair.

Acetone will damage your skin tissue, cause dryness, cracking, rashes, not what guitar players want for their fingers.

It sounds to me like the people here are just guessing when they tell you to use acetone. No-one has said they actually have experience using it to take off Krazy Glue.

I use Krazy Glue and, as a poster somewhere above this has said, just leave it and it will eventually flake off on its own. Once it starts flaking you can help it along by picking at it and it will pretty much all come off over the next couple of days. But usually before that happens, I just recoat.

It is a bit shiny though.

Dont cover the entire nail with glue, and you wont have to worry
about that problem.

Try going crackers with rasguedo. As Yojimbo says it'll flake off and you can pick it.

You can also try squeezing the nail from the sides (like squeezing a zit). It'll crack then you can go at it. But I always put it on in great globules so maybe it's easier to get some purchase.

yojimbo--the superglue corporation recommends using acetone to weaken the bond between superglue and whatever it is bonded to--in the usual case, two fingers glued together. letting it flake off the nail is probably the best course of action.

I got self-adhesive silk strips and nail glue off Ebay and it's worked very well for me. Just a piece of silk on the end of your nail, say the top third, a blob of nail glue, let it dry a while then trim it. Repeat this two or three times and it's great.

Nail glue is only Krazy glue anyway isn't it, cyanoacrylate?

I've had the silk on about two weeks now and still strong - very good for weeding the garden.

ALSO - CUTEX nail polish remover gel gets glue off with a little patience. It's gentler than the neat chemical. Them moisturise the nails with oil. All advice courtesy of my wife who finds the whole thing hilarious

I am (still) experimenting a lot with my nails. Nail hardener seems to work quite fine for me. I can't tell the difference with Krazy Glue though, since i haven't tried that out yet.

Can someone tell me something about the differences between: 'nothing applied', nail hardener' and 'Krazy Glue' related with sound, strength and nail health?

If you don't have to put anything on your nails don't do it. Glues/hardeners are not going to help the sound. Super glue, and nail glue/hardener are more or less the same thing and if you can get away without it that's your best bet. We already look like freaks for having one hand with nails in the first place, no need to accentuate it.

@Lenador thnx for your response... I agree on the 'looks' thing. People seem to find it even that scary they even don't mention anything about it!

Breaking nails are very frustrating though.

Still wonder in which method the sound is less affected though. My gut feeling says Krazy Glue might be a bit stronger? But what can i say, since i've never used it

RE: Krazy Glue nails - how to get off (in reply to Flamencito

My experience with natural nails, nail hardeners – such as Sally Hansen – and krazy glue, is that they all sound slightly different.
And they all have different sounds, pluses and minuses.

But I have to imagine that they all factor differently for different people. For example, my nails are plenty strong. I've never broken one in the act of playing. But what happens is they nail wears at the point where I make contact with the string. Eventually, this creates an uneven surface and the string seems to sink towards that area of repeated wear.

So I use strengtheners and such to prevent this.
I imagine that it would feel very different to have nails strengtheners if you are using them because your nails are thin and break all the time. It could be like nail Viagra!

Anyway, my experience is that when you put a couple coats of krazy glue on it gets so hard that your striking surface Is indestructible. And it sounds that way too. It's very bright and glassy on the trebles.

Sally Hansen similar but less so. And I never really had that sound with natural nails.

So I think yes, you can change and even manipulate tone with these products, but then your guitar and technique become a factor. So you want a brighter sound? What about long nails w/ product vs. short nails w/ product. It all will have an effect on your sound one way or another which can be good or bad depending on what you're after. Health-wise though, I can't imagine a lifetime of chemicals on your fingernails makes you "healthier".

If you've got issues with breaking nails one of two things is happening, your nails are too long, or you do have weak nails. Check out the other thread about HolyEvil breaking his nails, he's got a picture, I think that's a good length. If it's not length then nail glue over super glue any day. Number one, comes with a brush so it's easier to put on, number two it has vitamins and what not for your nails because the active ingredient (same as in super glue) can dry your nails out and make them brittle. Super glue I think is last resort.

The way you shape your nails is also important.
Pointy shape is very breackable.
Try to experiment with as straight as possible nailshape. Not too long.

Also skip the milk in your eating pattern the milk sour will break down the chalk ik your body and nails.

My own experiance, I played a lot of hours a day, do not have very hard nails, but only use glue on my thumb.
Do not glue the whole nail, only the part that is in conact with the strings.
Avoid to put glue on your nail skin, it can get allergic for it.

Thanks for your advices and experiences guys... Since it's such a personal thing, i like to hear how people individualy see and experience things, because it helps me in doing my experiments

Atm, i'm very happy about them actually. My nail hardner is feeling lonely, since he is not in use Probably (from what i read now) because i'm having the middle ones as short and straight as possible. Only my pinky seems to need a little every now and then...

THe guys who say don't take it off are right. BUT when it first starts to come off, put it back on with FAST superglue, not the regular stuff that they sell in nail salons. THe nail salons all sell "medium" superglue as brush-on nail glue. It is too viscous to get under a delaminating nail. You can get fast superglue at a hobby store. Superglue comes in slow, medium, and fast -- the fast sets fast, and is very very runny, but it will flow into any opening.

THIS ALWAYS WORKS.
1 Soak a small ball of cotton wool in ACETONE (not nail polish remover)
2 place it over the nail
3 Tightly wrap thye finger in clingwrap or alfoil
4 leave for 15/20 min

The glue will be a soft mush and can be wiped off with no damage to the nail.
