Tips on bulerías por arriba

Lately I've been playing with a guy who has a low voice so only sings bulerías por arriba (capo 3 or 4). I don't have as much experience playing in this key, does anyone have/know where I can learn some common compás variations and maybe some simple falsetas? Right now I've got one (that I ripped off Emilio Maya's record ) but I'm not sure how long I want to get by on a single falseta

La Plazuela de Paco

at minute 3
Its quite a "standard" among bulerías por arriba.
beautiful and easy, you can take here and there an idea you like and make it a bit shorter in case of cante accompaniment (when the singer does not want to wait that long until you are finished with the falseta )

THat's actually in Aminor....same notes of the scale but the phrasing and rhythm style is different than E phrygian. Chicuelo has some stuff on encuentro, but I first recommend trying to adapt some things you have por medio by shifting it UP a set of strings. Of course some fingerings have to get altered, and maybe you can't get entire falsetas but rather fragments, but it's a good place to start.

Maybe I'm gonna tell BS but what you pointed out is not in por arriba key. To me it sounds just like the typical minor modulation in por medio.
But since i'm not at all a theoritical guy, maybe this kind of harmonization fit well in the E phrygian mode. I doubt btw.

Search in reinaldos7 YT channel, you'll certainely find something. I once posted a falsetas I picked up from him in the swap shop thread.

If capo's 3 in E, you could also strum 4 in D# or 1 in F#.

And if you accomp, what do you need falsetas for? just strumming the compas it's enough...

EDIT

Crap, now I'm confused about which one I'm familiar with.......Last bulerias in the Juan Martin book ends in a major key of either A or E........

De Cadiz usually means major key. A-E7, E-B7, whatever. Not uncommon at all.

all time classic falseta at the beginning-love the way he plays bulerias por arriba-a real power player.

Thanks for this tip, I've started doing this and it's actually a really useful exercise. Although I made the mistake of trying to play a falseta at a gig the day after I first tried adapting it, and completely flubbed it

Cool!! I really like that. The one falseta I've been playing (apart from a couple that, following Ricardo's advice, I started transferring over from por medio), very cool and straightforward, is one I ripped from this Emilio Maya bulería, starting around 3:38:

Take some traditional solea falsetas,

Instead of counting 10, 11, 12 and doing this,

-----------------0---------------
--------------0--------------0--
----------1--------------1-----
----------------------2-----
----------------------------
--0----------------------

Replace the above part with 7,8, 9, 10 strumming for bulerias. See if you can feel it?

I'm in the same boat.
And interestingly, it seems the majority of YouTube samples I can find are in "chipmunk" zone - capo 6/7/8, usually for women

Does anyone have good samples of capo 3/4 por Arriba bulerias for low male singers?

Better yet, anything modern-ish? Diego de Moron etc. is cool..but I'd love to get something more current.

(And Eb, and similar modern tonos aren't working: it's a different sound that this singer isn't so fond of)

Just replace the A and Bb with E and F for starters and see what you can do by feel then copy some moves from the vids. Altough I haven't tried it myself(bulerias por arriba), but I can imagine that the difference isn't more than playing solea por arriba vs por medio.

RE: Tips on bulerías por arriba (in reply to tele

I think this approach, while valid and necessary, is only a small part of the picture. and only gets you so far

Case in point: if it's only a matter of swapping 'por medio' with 'por arriba', why then when guitarists play por arriba don't they constantly hit the B string w/ i finger in the same way we all hit the high E string w/ i, as a way of filling in the compás, you know?

it ought to create the same sound, as the relationships of the notes E and B are the same as A and E.

I'd say it's a hand thing - playing on the B string is awkward'. But that's one of the reasons why I would think there ought to be a unique approach for this toque. (obviously, constantly hitting the high E string w/ i playing por arriba *is* a unique approach)

Another thing: if these are so exchangeable, why isn't everyone playing por arriba at 6 instead of por medio at 1? (etc etc)

It's just a different sound. But also, everything sounds different, feels different and lays different on the guitar. The tensions on the strings are different, etc etc
And there are so many falsettas that just don't work in E they way they do in A.

So back to the question: does anyone have recordings, resources, etc of bulerias cante accompaniment por arriba?!

although this is killer, the toque is in C, so this would mean adapting Bulerias de Cádiz - played in C - to Bulerías por Arriba.

Nevertheless, I'm transcribing that killing escobilla-picado falsetta right now!! :)

I know a good recording which features Javier Heredia and the Amparo Brothers on "Puro y Vivo". Pepe Habichuelas "Al Aire" is por arriba too, I think. You could steal a bit.

I don't see a problem tho.. just transpose the chords from C to E.. or put a capo on the 4th =)
Was just showing what bulerias in major (de cadiz) sounds like..

in Am, check this clip out.. not a big fan of traditional sounding flamenco, but just for the idea
