Antonio Hermosa AH-15 Flamenco Guita...

I didn't bring my guitars from Beirut to Nashville with me, and I have started to suffer from guitar withdrawal, so I need to get a flamenco guitar. Of course it's going to be a cheap one for now because I've spent a lot of money while moving and have not stabilized financially yet. Once that happens, I'll move onto bigger and better things, but for now, I came across this on Amazon and was wondering if anyone has tried it. I was thinking it might be a refreshing change from the Yamaha flamenco guitars (I've played a good CG171SF which I liked). Also, it's somewhat cheaper, and I'm considering this to be my "beater" guitar.

Please advise...

Here is the information on the official website: http://www.antoniohermosa.com/ah15.html

Here is the information on Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/7ax4sa3

Here is someone on YouTube showing this guitar and testing it out:

PS: Funny, I just noticed that the guitar comes with no golpeadores on it...

I love the sound of that, I'm looking for a starter guitar and you obviously know what you are talking about, so thanks for the heads up. Best wishes for your new life in Nashville.

Hey Ramzi,

Are you asking about this brand because you are thinking of ordering one over the net before playing it?

Why not rock up to a few music shops and play the guitars in your price range? And then pick the best one?

Yes, I am actually thinking about ordering one from the net. I can't go check out the guitar shops for two reasons:

1- I checked most of the shops' inventories online, and none of them offer anything close to flamenco guitar (most barely have nylon string guitars)

2- They are not within walking distance, and I am quite busy with work, plus I don't intend to take a taxi cab to several shops (I don't have a car here)

Hey Ramzi,
I know you don't want to go running around all over Nashville to look at guitars, but maybe you could place a call to Nashville Used Music? When I lived there they always had some great prices, and would normally have a flamenco or two in stock. Also there's Gruen Guitars on Broadway downtown, and Guitar Center should have an Orpheus Valley Rosa flamenco in stock. Those aren't bad for the money... You could also Google a fellow named Jerry Roberts. He's a guitar dealer in Nashville who only deals in classicals and flamencos. Jerry has some good stuff, but is over priced a lot of times. It may be worth a call to him though just to see what he has on hand. His web site is always out of date... Hope you find something you can live with for a good price.

It seems to sound pretty good for its category. I believe it has a bone nut and saddle. Some people have found the action a bit high. Be aware though, it has no golpeadores! You can buy Oasis Armor static cling golpeadores from SBM for six dollars.

Hey Ramzi,
Contact David Wood at Franklin Guitar & Repair in Franklin, TN. Its a suburb of Nasville and I purchased my Burguet 1F from David back in 2006. Real nice guy, used to handle Burguet and several other flamenco makers. Not sure if he still does but he might be a good resource. Contact him at 615-595-2268

Ramzi –

I just was in a Sam Ash an hour ago, and I played a Yamaha 172SF. I had previously briefly played one, and I thought it was not bad for its category. I just took a harder look. It has the ugliest looking and color neck in guitar history. And the matte finish really does make it look cheap. Worse, the matte finish on the neck inhibits the movement of your left thumb back and forth on the neck.

It has a decent flamenco sound – again, for its category. But the bottom line is that all of these low end flamenco guitars are basically junk. They're good for a beginner or the beach. So while one or the other might be slightly better – in a relative sense, the truth is that in an absolute sense they're all still junk. The prevailing theory is that you might as well get the best of the junk. I look at it differently. The way I see it is that since they're all junk, you might as well get the cheapest of the junk.

So I think you might be best off with the AH.

Ramon,
I'm a little surprised at your latest opinion of the Yamaha CG172SF. In earlier posts by you, I thought that I had read that you liked the 172SF and that you liked it better than the previous 171SF version. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, and I do respect your opinion. I'm just surprised that you have apparently changed your opinion of it.

Read my post. I say I had previously played the 172SF "briefly," and that today I "took a harder look."

And in any case, any comments that I make on low end beginner guitars I generally qualify by adding "for its category."

For that price... its worthless to think about quality. Just go for it and save some money for a better one.

Hi Ramzi,

At this point you play so awesome that you''ll no doubt make this cheap guitar sound great

The only think I would be concerned about is whether the neck is straight and playable...

It's probably not going to be super straight and playable, but this beats not having a guitar at all. Anyway, we'll see...

There are some cheap guitars that come with a truss rod (like mine). It gives extra weight to the guitar neck but at least you know you can always get your neck straight.

You might want some sandpaper too to remove the laquer from the neck and then apply something else. I use something called cera metalizada (metalic wax?). Its to be used on kitchen stone but works great on wood, dries fast and will shine even if you use wet sandpaper.

Ramzi -

One of my students just asked me about this guitar. Did you ever buy it?

It's really weird. Apart from no golpeadores, I see several different photos of the AH-15 with a reinforcement strip in the neck. Now how the hell can a $250 guitar have a reinforcement strip. But I've also seen some photos that show this guitar without the strip.

Anyone ever play one of these?

Ramon
