Sun damage on guitar? 
Just yesterday I was playing outside on the patio, when I had to go answer a 'phone call - leaving the guitar lying on a chair, face up.

When I got back about 10-15 minutes later I found the guitar face quite hot to the touch, through being exposed to direct sunlight. I was surprized it was so hot after such a short time!

It made me think; 'what would happen if I inadvertently left the guitar out in the sun for a whole afternoon? Would it permanently damage the guitar in some way? Would the glue become unstuck, etc. etc.

Anybody here had problems leaving a guitar in direct sunlight for long periods?

Maybe this should be in the "Lutherie" forum?

I personally wouldn't leave it directly in the sun even for a few minutes. In my mind the sun warming it up so fast will cause wood expansion and potential warping or drying out the exposed areas.

as far as I know the glue will melt and then the bridge might peel off and different characters of your guitar will change so avoid the sun.

On my deck where it get's quite hot I would say it would result in cracks, among other things like warping would not surprise me. And I won't even go into the chances of 'finish cancer'.

Sun = heat = suck up humidity = possible crack.

You should take a look at the relicing/aging jobs some guys do on their nitro finished fender stratocasters/telecasters from leaving them in the sun and weather. Now ask yourself if you want your flamenco to go through something like that.

If it is a Yamaha you can leave it in the desert sand on a hot summer, and have
no ill efects ... No problem to take it to the beach, and leave it near the surf
either. Playing next to the bonfire? Not an issue. Oops left it next to the sauna door? No problem just a bit hot to the touch. Spill some beer on it? Wipe it off.
Your mileage may vary with other brands :)

It's a worthy test though, I say take that expensive Conde (over priced anyway)
lay it out on a hot summer day, and post your results? Split right in half? Yep?
exactly, over priced ... Can't take any real usage.

Exactly, for when you gotta have a guitar that you can't afford to have let
you down at a critical moment. One that can handle everything from desert heat, to the mud and humidity of the jungle, to the cold of the artic. This
is when you really NEED a Yamaha, and nothing else will do. The music

Just got to London from the remote wilds of Norfolk, visiting the old family digs. Rain, wind, sun, rain, wind, sun....Even in the sun it's a bit cool for me, having lived for years in the tropics.

C'mon, what kind of question is this? Of course never -ever-ever leave your guitar in the sun or a hot car.

I can show you a nice classical guitar that folded up on itself under the tension of the strings when the owner left it in the trunk on a hot day.

Yes. A guy from Germany brought me an artisan-made Spanish flamenco guitar that had been badly damaged from exposure to direct sunlight. The soundboard was so badly warped--caved in between the bridge and soundhole--that it was hopeless to try to repair it.

Just rub on some 85 sunblock it will be just fine all afternoon. Unless of course you want to let get a little darker you can use low number sunblock. Something like 12 should turn your blanca to a nice golden brown negra. Remeber to flip it over though.

H M M M. Actually, I already thought of that, amigo. For the price of some of these custom guitars, maybe they should include a "sun-proof" treatment in the finish?

Anyway; I won't be dumb enough to leave any of mine lying out in the sun in future. Need to watch out indoors (through windows) too I guess.?
