beer in the shop? 
Considering putting a small frig in the workshop which would hold a few choice beers. I've always made a point of not mixing alcohol and power tools, but thought it would be cool to be able to offer a visitor a beer. Kind of slow things down and allow one to enjoy the moment a bit more. Worried that I tap into it myself and have a drink while working :(

So, how do you guys feel; would you keep some cold ones in your shop?

Nah Paul,

Bad idea IMO.

Offer them coffee or something.

Beer is something you do AFTER work, not during.

You're gonna end up with half-assed rosettes and crazy neck angles and say "WTF that's good enough" and go back to the keg.

Homer Simpson teaches us that.

Work is that necessity which happens inbetween getting drunk.

I keep a mini fridge filled with Guinness for the END of the day. Nothing like putting the tools down for the day and cracking open a Guinness.

I have a refrigerator in the shop with a few cold beers inside. I don't drink beer so it's not a temptation but wouldn't hesitate to offer one to a friend or customer. I personally don't drink while building but have known some really fine craftsmen who did. If you can handle it and feel comfortable around sharp things while drinking why not? The shop is such an appealing place to be it would certainly be a nice place to drink if there were a chair to sit in (no chairs allowed in my shop).

I drink some 2 - 3 beers a month and sometimes it happens in the workshop.... Uhhhh. Thats dangerous.

No, it's kept under lock and key in the house. However the several hundred bottles of wine are not.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with ONE beer.

I guess it's not getting tipsy or drunk, it's just that "F**k it, I'll relax, have another beer and do it later" attitude you can potentially get when having a beer.

How come you don't drink beer John? Are you a wine snob? I bet you are.

Speaking of wine, I have a 1966 Charles Krug Sav that will be ceremoniously opened soon. It will probably be drinkable, but I don't expect it to be great. Miraculously it was stored correctly all those years before I acquired it from a trash can, still laying on it's side.

A cold beer does wonders for washing the taste of spanish cedar out of your mouth
I don't have a stocked fridge or naked women in the dungeon but you guys sure are giving me some great ideas on how to spruce the place up.

I´m a wine snob. Or in other words. I dont drink much wine, but I´m really a snob.

I dont have any problems with one beer in the workshop. Not at all. Whats the problem?

I generally use oil, never tried sawdust.

Beer is a hot weather drink which makes it kind of superfluous here on the Alsea. I make my own wine so it works out to be about the cheapest alcohol I can drink and fortunately I like it. You need a lot if you plan to consume a bottle a day or more.

Too bad your Charles Krug isn't a cabernet. '66 is pretty old for a white wine hopefully it's still good. A bottle of 2006 chardonnay turned up in our larder that had somehow escaped consumption. It made me wish that the age of our wine was stated in years rather than months.

Here, here! I made a very conscious decision last year when I moved into my latest workshop - fridge - for milk and er.......beer. I'm south facing too so get a fair bit of sun during the day. I tend to start later in the summer because of this. I must stress though - End of the day. I never drink during the day (holidays aside) but on a hot day, the music comes up from the bar downstairs about 9pm and when I get to a suitable point, it's down tools, a bit of relection and something cool. It's nice to have people over sometimes too. If I was rolling out of the workshop and into the gutter at midnight, I might have to modify my habits, but so far, it's the biz.

Flamingrae ..... if there is a bar downstairs you dont really need a fridge just go and get some draught ...........

I buy bottled. Cans only if bottles are sold out. The best combo after a long day is sitting on the back porch with a Guinness and a nice cigar while the sun sets. 2 years ago it would have been beer and cigarettes but I quit that. Now I have the wife lecturing me about cigars not being any better for me but I love them.

There's a local brewery up the road from me called BrewDog who make a beer called "The End of History".

It's 55% ABV.

Sheet....that's stronger than WHISKY!!!

Don't have one of those while you're working, as in " oh..my, my...it's getting a wee bit hot in here....I think I just might have a wee refreshment tae cool me doon..."

On the other hand, you could have them available for visiting clients....

"See that guitar...that's the best guitar I've ever heard in my life....I love that guitar... I'll take it...I love you too so I do...you're my best pal....how much was it again? No bother my friend and here's a tip to buy something nice for the kids...Can you get me a taxi...I'm feeling a bit dizzy... "

Guiness is actually better in the can then a bottle in Canada, most other beers being the opposite.

There's some good ones. I just fancy Guinness. Mexican beer with lime is refreshing on a hot summer day.
