A Message from Mickey Jones

A bit of a convoluted story here, but for the past several years I’ve know that a woman from here at work has been romantically involved and living with some guy who was supposed to have some connection to the 60s era rock scene, which I sort of registered but shrugged off into the “Huh, that’s cool…” category. I’ve also known for some time that the eccentric old guy that works at the bike shop I live next to (the family who owns and runs the shop also owns my house, so I regularly go over to the shop to drop off the rent, deal with house maintenance, etc.) is supposed to have had some involvement in the rockabilly scene way back when, and, again, I kind of shrugged this off as tall tale stuff that was probably not all it was cracked up to be.

So, after five years I put two and two together and only just recently figured out that these two guys are actually the same guy, Dave Shriver, and that he was indeed a player in the 60s scene, getting his start with EDDIE ****ING COCHRAN, and later, alongside Mickey Jones, backing up Trini Lopez for years, sharing bills with the Beatles, and so on. I think I overheard something about him hanging backstage at Dylan’s infamous “Royal Albert Hall” show (Mickey Jones had replaced Levon Helm on drums by that point, who had got sick of being booed all the time so he briefly quit “The Band” and went back home and got a day job.). And to make the small world/small town connections even smaller, I see that he’s also played with the Johnny Lewis Band (Lewis is another old show-biz casino big band type from the 50s/60s who somehow ended up settling here), who my mom’s long-time boyfriend played with on and off over the years. So, I may have met Dave at some earlier point in the past.

Anyway, Dave hit a rough patch in his health this past month, culminating in a stroke that he’s slowly recovering from. As a tribute to him, Mickey Jones just put up this video with some really nice old super 8 footage of him and David on the road back in the early days. I figured there might be some of you old timers out there who might enjoy seeing it. And it looks like Mickey Jones his in need of a kidney (!), so if you want to pass on one of your kidneys to him, now’s the time to do it.

What a weird little world we live in. You never know what kind of crazy life the old guy next door or sitting next to you on the bus might have led……

Lockhart, just 30 miles down the tollway from Austin, is the barbecue capital of Texas with four--count 'em four(4)--great barbecue places. They include Smitty's, on the town square, which goes back to the 19th century days of cowboys and Indians, and where the barbecue is so good they don't serve sauce. You don't even ask.

Since Lockhart is the barbecue capital of Texas, it follows that it is the barbecue capital of the world.

We may elect Neanderthals for legislators and a moronic buffoon for governor, but by God, we have good barbecue.

Ok I hear you and the service at E&J is horrible, but it's two blocks from my shop and I partake simply because they are there.

Oh, man that looks messy. Your next git box is gonna have sauce stained fan braces.

Coming up on eight years since I was last in the Bay Area, and I'm missing all my spots. I definitely prefer the other E&J locations to the Jack London outlet; the one up near Gilman St., the one by the Oakland/Berkeley border. I live in a town with no good BBQ (or most other food, for that matter), so I don't even bother....

I've got a few friends who have relocated to Austin, and they make frequent treks out to Lockhart. I've yet to visit, and they routinely send me cell phone pics of what I'm missing out on.

Poor, poor me............

Doit, here in the U.S. it's really no big deal for a man to get a "Personal Massage" from another burly, bearded dude. It doesn't mean anything. You should try it while you're here. When it Rome.....
