Ah... a pi-year...

How about the end of March?

No tabs. Part of the challenge is to pick it up by ear/sight, as that's what you'll be expected to do in a masterclass or from a teacher in Spain.

cheers,

Ron

RE: Time for a challenge? (in reply to Ron.M

How about entries will be mp3 only, uploaded under your own screen-name to a special "entry thread" which will be opened by Admin at 12.00 noon GMT Saturday 31 March and locked again on Sunday 12.00 noon GMT 1 April.

Votes by Public Poll on "general performance" with written comments added if desired.

A special "voting thread & poll" will be opened by Admin on Sunday 12.00 noon GMT 1 April and locked on Sunday 12 noon GMT 8 April thus ending further voting.

Challenge will be known as "Ricardo Solea Challenge"

Intermediate level.

Must be a member for at least 2 months (ie joined on or before 1 February 2012) to enter or vote. (can be checked by Admin)

Enter the challenge only if you find the falseta difficult to play at this point in time.

Smart Alecs and advanced players who find it easy and are just showing off, will be disqualified, publicly flogged and their hands nailed to the floorboards by Security, or made to post a video of themselves playing "El Tempúl" at full speed at least as good as Paco.

No editing, punch-ins or electronic audio manipulation. Winner will be required to post a video of their performance afterwards.

What do you think?

cheers,

Ron

I say let's just try it.
Spend less time arguing about organization and more time practising the falseta.

Pick it up by ear is right up my street , Ok with that one ...end of March is fine too ..
not liking the entries up loaded using your 'already known ' screen name as it may lead to a unneeded bias , you see the name and think ... " he is good " and therfore has points already ,,.. I still like the anon upload system as it depends on the ear of the people who condem you ....or not ......and surprises may happen , lesser players moving up a bit , or maybe even better players slipping ... dont rest on your laurels ,,, hmmm
Public Poll is good , but some comments from a judge or two is always appreciated , you know we can take it , it only makes us better , and many times we already know what the critic will say , we just need to see it in black and white to make it official ...
Clarify....No editing, punch-ins or electronic audio manipulation. would include a bit of EQ to hide the crappyness of my guitar and /or ambient reverb if required ....meaning it is understood that the entree would be done... 1 guitar , 1 person , 1 take.. (not necessarily the first take though) if you know what I mean ,, a bit like previous challenges .

Winner will be required to post a video of their performance afterwards.

I like that bit , means the entree can make a vid , then just extract the sound for the challenge and put them together after for show ...
Q, ....would it be a lot of work to submit a secret video somehow, and have an Admin extract audio only to MP3 for the voting, labeled A, B, C , or whatever ,.etc and later post the vids they came from ...? or am I over complicating things ? I was just thinking of fairness...
Thanks , still thinking ...

Personally I think favouritism would have very little effect on the final outcome.
The only problem I see is that an obviously good entry would receive all the votes and the others just left with 1 vote..(their own)...so no gradation. Still, not important as voters can leave written comments on ANY of the players. (as in the Sir Spam-a-Lot thread/poll.) The poll is only to determine the best entry according to other Foro members.
Since there will be many, many more "judges", favouritism would be diluted out.

Reverb, Compression, EQ is OK...just no post editing ie assembling an entry from a number of takes. After all you will be required to post a video if you win.

No video entries...mp3 only. Too much work dammit.

This is more like a self-checkout challenge as in Supermarkets where the customers choose their stuff and check it out themselves without any staff intervention.
Makes life easier and doesn't require one person to collect all the entries and anonymize the names and upload them all etc.

cheers,

Ron

then it would be nice if voters could have a first and second (or third) points thing available just to spread the points out instead of an 'all or nothing' 1 vote system...

Yes Rico, it would, but unfortunately we don't have one.
So we just get on with what we have.
The winner will still be the winner, regardless of voting format.
It's only for one bleedin' challenge just to try out...not statutory Foroflamenco policy for evermore for God's sake!

cheers,

Ron

Ricardo, thanks so much for this challenge! It's hard to shake off the dust and try to figure something out by ear. I guess I owe Ron a thanks for that as well. Good to see you back here!

Very tricky there with the open G string.

We can do it even sooner. Two months is a long time. Maybe two weeks?

RumbaKing - My suggestion: lose the tie.

Seriously, that was the best playing I've heard from you. Good job! You rasgeos are wicked strong! Still looks like you're not super comfortable with picado, the only thing you can do is play a lot of scales slowly. Try to make them enjoyable (for your sake).

You can add more rhythmic variety (do different rasgeos) but it's not overly monotonous or anything.

I know you're rarin' to go Chester, but the main idea of the challenges is to attract folk who kinda doubt if they would be able to play the set piece, but are tempted to give it a go.
Eight weeks is not a long time for those who can maybe only practise at weekends.

So you can play it.
How is your tone and attack?
Is everything clean and confident and bang on compás?

These are the things which make all the difference and take longer to develop, even when you "know" how to play it.

But if all you guys insist on bringing the closing date forward then we can.

Let's wait a week or so to see who's entering.

cheers,

Ron

I think you should move this post /thread to the challenges part of the foro with the rules , or what ever you think at the front and then more people will see it and get on board , hopefully

I have really felt for a long time that I am one of the lesser talented guitarists here on the foro.

RumbaKing, don't even go there. Music should never be a competition. Once you start defining your self-worth through comparison to others it's a vicious cycle that never ends. I'll put it in beach terms: There's always going to be someone who's more tan and more buff than you, it's a fact of life. All that matters is what you see when you look in the mirror. You already have a beautiful family and you can rip on the flamenco guitar. Not to mention you live near the beach. I never want to hear any self-pity from you again - capish?!?!

Well... Ahem... There are always things to work on (unless you're Ricardo).

I hear you regarding being considerate to the others' busy schedules (I can't help being a bum). I'll ease the pressure and let you come up with the timeframe, seeing as you're one of the *administrators*.

Will you be joining us as well? It's been a long time since we heard the 'man in black' shred.

But I think your playing is really good and you have a good flamenco type sound , thats difficult ( for me ) to get, rasgueardo is very clear and definate , everything is good, picado is very close to the bridge, but thats just me.
I thought you didn't enter challenges because they were not a challenge for you, and you would be more on the judging and advice side

btw Ron as you classified this challenge as intermediate ... can I still enter ?
I won the last intermediate challenge but i still think this piece won't be so easy to me
I remember a rule stating that a winner of a challenge can only enter higher level challenges later , so what do you think ?

I just don't want to be punished as a smart alec
