Time for a challenge?

Now that the new year has been established and the hangovers are cured , is it time to start thinking of a new challenge(s) again ?¿

yea I think it is time for a challenge
lets start by putting suggestions, remember moraito's famous buleria masterclass ?
lets figure it out by ear and play it ( just a suggestion )

btw I won't be able to practice before February so take your time organizing the challenge heehe

its a cool one
http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=184428&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=hafez&tmode=&smode=&s=#184597
but i learnt it so probably i wont enter if it was chosen

its nice , but I think we need to sort out whos doing what as well as what we play , I have no problem with that falseta but if you cant entre then maybe admn should be in as an advisor to help get the ball rolling.

Here is a challenge....goes along with "internet is in danger" thread.

Turn off the computer for one week. Listen to CDs or records or whatever, but no websites or youtube. (of course work related things, banking and bills if you must...although I recommend even try doing that the old fashioned way too. ).

The time you spend on line downloading sharing or surfing etc...spend with the guitar instead. After the week is done, turn on computer, make a vid of what you have worked on and share it.

The challenge is can you get by with zero internet actually.

I could not agree more, Ricardo! And since you have already hijacked this "challenge" thread, allow me to continue it by suggesting that anyone engaged in researching a topic, do some real research by actually delving into primary sources and stop using Wikipedia as a crutch. Much of Wikipedia is really an "Encyclopedia of Misinformation" anyway, as much of it is simply wrong or misleading. I had to laugh at some who thought Wikipedia's closing down yesterday was the end of the world. In fact, it did everyone a favor by forcing those needing information to go to some legitimate sources for their information.

Cheers,

Bill

Due to copyright issues.....However I think the challenge should be that Ricardo since he owns the rights to his own material shares some falsetas from his alegrias and we have a week to learn them as best we can.....

What do you say Ricardo?????

I don't mind...but it's fair to those that already purchased them? How about folks learning em BY EAR like I did actually! or make their own transcription. I would not mind correcting anybody later.

anyway, falsetas fall under fair use we discussed this million times. Anyone can share any single falseta of mine or any other flamenco IMO. Flamenco is ideal type of music for Fair use demonstration because we learn and teach via falsetas, not complete musical pieces. Or should be anyway.

Anyway, my point is forget the internet. LISTEN to some music and try to learn it or just practice your guitar is the point. It CAN be done without downloaded tabs!

Anybody actually purchase any books or recordings, or instructional videos? I mean anything other then internet stuff is my point.

I think its very hard to just practice, without having a reason, say a teacher or maybe some kind of project youre involved with (can be flamenco, can be something else). This seems to be the main problem struggling players have, not technique, compas or internet. But anyway i think you are right that often we waste too much time on the net! How many times i have caught myself spending hours on it, when i initially just wanted to quickly check mails and then log off .

Go ahead amigo!
You had some constructive thoughts in the previous challenge, should be no problem to get it organized!

I was thinking of being on the participating side of things rather than the organization , where i dont really know where to begin , I suppose we need a few falsetas and a level

Just an idea, what if we had one extremely simple falseta and the challenge was not to play it well but rather to make it your own falseta ie put in your own ornamentations, rhythmical changes, modulations, write new sections based on it, whatever you can think of! That way people of all levels can participate to a degree they are comfortable.

Any takers?

I like that idea , and I already kinda do that with some falsets that I cant quite play ...

Not sure about all levels in at the same time , cos the better players will do better , of course..
this is also a bit of a compositional challenge then , not just playing..?

Awesome, lets find a reasonably simple falseta mabey something with a lot of space to be elaborated upon?

That would be Fine.... then since it is a challenge and, which means a bit of work to do , how about making a mini, stand alone Solear.
Meaning if someone supplied 3 or 4 easyish falsetas then we could choose from them , say maybe 2 ,
Make from that a little intro (helps set the mood , then the 2 falsetas with all the variations going and end it ,, Ching bum...ole .....

Then I dont know what happens about levels or is it just a free for all, dive in ..?
Also will be needing a few judges at least and a place to upload the results later ...

OK ¿ ideas.............comments........

Ok got a challenge. Solea Falseta by Niño Ricardo. I got it from the only vid I know of him playing solo, easy to find on youtube. It uses the "horquilla" technique he pioneered, a type of arpegio where you use "am" together, then i and p so you have a triplet phrase. Some players use this also and do a pull off for 16th note phrases.

N. Ricardo does this technique very synchopated in compas....it goes against the accents. For this reason I play it with metronome accenting in 3, so 1,4,7,10 of the compas. It makes more sense that way when you hear the synchopated 16th notes. Fast version is 130bpm, slow version is 80.

Excellent work, Ricardo. This falseta racks one's brain rhythmically, alright. Olé!
