1 day after laser surgery on the eyes

Yesterday I'd had an Advanced CustomVue Wafefront Intralease laser surgery.
A mouthfull, but in the end it means that within 5 minutes my -7 and -4 with cylinder has been reduced to normal sight.

For me its such a relief, and can see even better than I did before with lenses.

Yesterday all was vague, but this morning when I woke up, everything was getting clear.
Went for some control check and I could read the smallest letters without any problems.

The main reason was that I had very dry eyes, and the lenses started to hurt. Yes I could wear glasses, but have been laughed at too much when I was young, so I decided for this solution.

I am very happy with it, and go back to work tomorrow.

Anybody else had laser surgery?

I haven't, but I would if I were younger.
As it is, I'd need reading-glasses even if my shortsightedness were corrected, so it isn't really worth the €8000.- per eye I'd have to pay here

I've been wearing glasses since age 13 and wasn't ever laughed at

Wow, thats quite some money! Overhere it was an Anders guitar with some expensive tuners.
I am aware that within time reading glasses willnbe necessary...but for the coming 20 years it'll be fine.

They advertised with 595 per eye, but in the end it was trippled...advertisement the scottisch way

Yes, I had that done 3 months ago. I had 3 diopters of myopia along with some astigmatism. I am free of eyeglasses now. Each eye cost me $700 here in Beirut.

It's funny though that you mention the reason was because you had very dry eyes which made wearing contacts problematic. With this procedure, eyes usually get every drier, and I assume your ophthalmologist prescribed (along with the coming 10 days worth of topical antibiotics and steroids) some artificial tears for you to use for the coming weeks (if not few months).

I just hope you don't suffer from your eyes getting symptomatic because of dryness after this procedure. This is one of the most common and most annoying complications of such surgeries. It's good I didn't go through this. There's a way around it though which seems to help - punctal plugs.

I hope you recover fast, Kozz. Keep us posted!

Hee ramzi, must be a relief isn't it?
I am totally aware of the case that the eyes can become even dryer. Funny enough I don't experience that at the moment.
They adviced the procedure with the extra contact lens as a cover for healing because of dry eyes, but recovery would take a longer time...and it was even cheaper.

Now I do have trafloxal and some kind of acetate, and ofcourse some artifical tears.

My eyes feel normal (or maybe I was used to the irritating lenses) and have no red eyes or bleadings.
The worst thing during surgerybwas that they closed my vains in my eye so I got temporarily blind.
The lasering itselves was like looking into HAL (space odyssee).

How did your recovery go?

I am still amazed by the results and can't stop smiling reading signs far ahead.

I needed to use the tears every couple of hours for the first week or 10 days. Of course, you shouldn't get water on or inside your eyes at first.

Then it gets better, and now I can go without the tears if I want to. It feels better if I use them after waking up in the morning, and before sleeping at night. Otherwise, I seem to be doing OK.

Oh yeah, and in the first month or so, I'd get many instances of one eye for example going blurry, and annoying. It would remain so until the next day. But I don't get that anymore. That was attributed to dryness. The eyes don't heal equally fast, therefore one sometimes blurs, and the other doesn't.

I'm happy now though...

Why I did this surgery? Because I had refractive errors, and I wanted to correct them. I had been wearing glasses for the past 10 years, and I might be traveling to the USA next year for clinical training and the such ... Felt like I didn't want to get bogged down with glasses anymore.

Ladykiller? Dude, I'm El Rumbero. I can get any lady even if I had four eyes.

I had a primitive version of it. Just two pieces of plastic (like the eye-pieces of your goggles) that I had to TAPE with sticky-tape to my face!

I would wake up the day after and take the tape off and have glue stuck all over my face. That was annoying, but it was only for 1 week.

Must be great to regain good sight.

I read your posts with interest.
The more as I am gradually realizing increasingly degrading sight.

Some ten years or so ago, a friend of mine was thinking of having his eyes lazered, which made me research on the state of the art.
At that time there existed already thrilling reports about well known athletes who had their eyes lazered and came out at times with sight beyond common performance.
Yet, I returned to my friend with a warning as risk of complications used to be still too high, with scars occuring and lazering devices having been either not up to notch yet, or latest productions scarcely found because of their extreme pricings.
Also surgery pricing at that time seemed to be around 4000 DM ( ~ 2000 € ) or less.

And today?
Would the average treatment include devices precise and reliable enough / average operators be firm enough for a predictable job?

I don't think the devices are going to be a problem. Also, knowing that ophthalmologists are the ones performing the procedure, I think it should be fine.

It's much better than it was a few years ago.

My eyes were measured at 250 points vs 1 point in earlier treathments.
During lasering, a sensor is following the pupil, and the laser will stop when the pupil moves. The pupil should not move because of those eyedrops.
In the past it could happen that the laser was burning parts away that should not be.

Use the artificial tears frequently this first week. You can use them as much as needed (once every 1 hour, or even once every half-hour). Hang in there! It gets better bit by bit.

i've been thinking of having this done for years...
i was discouraged by my optometrist saying that the operation doesn't guarantee getting back perfect sight, in which case i'd be stuck with glasses, whereas now i can wear contact lenses...
i'll probably re-explore the issue in the near future...

Actually I went for a weekend playing Splintercell

They are not comfortable, swimming glasses feel better

They still don't guarantee it,...actually I had to sign for it.
But chances are big you will.
Thats why they do an intake to see if there can be any isues.

Some people don't feel comfortable when they have to sign such paper, I can understand....but the technique has increased a lot over the years, so I had no doubts.

1. How is your night vision? Are you seeing any halos around objects.
2. How is your reading vision?
3. The "dry eye" issue. Has this gone away, or do you need to use drops like Restasis?

Hi,
my nightvision is ok, no halo's anymore.
My reading vision is ok, its better is has ever been.
It'll improve still over the next month or so.

The dry eye issue is getting better. The first week they were very very dry, now it is getting better. Still use drops.
