Aranjuez solo

Does anyone here play or have a tab of the middle section of Rodrigos guitar concierto as a guitar solo?
If so, please post it and save me a lot of work.
Thanks
P

I have the orchestral score here. I have been trying to get a version together that matches the solo line and chord accompaniment at the same time.
This is kind of what i had in mind. I havent written the timing on the notes. You can get that from the score or by listening to the piece. With only a couple of changes in fingering it has been easy to get both parts to be playable as a solo.

There are in fact several errors in the time indications of the score.

Thanks for the moral support Adam
@Paul - I wondered if the score was 100% correct. I thought it was just me not being a great score reader! There are also couple of bits that dont seem possible the way they are fingered either, so I am changing them too.
(At this rate I will have re written the classical guitar repertoire in the next 30 years)

RE: Aranjuez solo (in reply to Pimientito

My observation has been that almost no one plays the score exactly as written; for instance, when the melody comes in (in the second movement), no one plays that bass G. The climax of the first movement (at the top of the fingerboard), John Williams actually takes down an octave, which I think sucks.

As to the errors: if you were to enter the score into a music program like Finale, you’d find that the time values don’t always add up to exactly one bar.

IMHO Angel Romero did a pretty sloppy job.

BTW, are you actually arranging from the orchestral score, or the piano reduction?

I am using the Angel Romero piano reduction.
Mostly though I'm listening to the Paco de lucia performance for the phrasing.
I agree with everything you said about the majority of performances omitting and simplifying parts. Pacos interpretation was considered by Rodrigo himself to be one of the best and so thats what I am using for reference.

RE: Aranjuez solo (in reply to Pimientito

Its been a rainy day today so I have got round to working out the second part of this solo. If anyone is wondering why I'm working it out its because of several reasons. Firstly its probably the most well known guitar theme ever and I got fed up of saying I coundnt play it because I needed an orchestra to accompany me. Secondly it makes a good bridal march. Thirdly, its also the introduction to the Chick Corea jazz classic "Spain". For those reasons I have been meaning to get a solo version of this together and I think its a handy thing to have in your fingers.

Whenever you make an arrangement for solo guitar there is always a compromise between what is musically pleasing and what is technically practical.
I want to say thanks to those of you who sent me some tabs of this piece to help me. Someone sent me a solo version that had been simplified to A minor. This was certainly much easier to play but also it missed out a lot of the ornamentation in the melody. It also made the melody an octave lower and this really didnt bring out the best in this solo. The other thing is that if in the future you ever want to learn this section to play with other musicians ( including as a jazz piece) you have to relearn it. For that reason I wanted to keep the piece in the original B minor.

This second half is considerably harder to pull off than the first. The biggest problem was that it was imposible to keep a chord of F# while playing melody up around the 7th fret. For that reason I had to change a short section to a lower register. However the rest of the solo is the same and I think overall I am happy with the arrangment. There is a big jump from the 3rd to 7th fret with the 1st finger at one point which takes some practice. Otherwise good luck guys. Let me know what you think.

Most of the rest of this movement is a guitar solo anyway so a full version can easily be made from the score. Its certainly a very rewarding and beautiful composition.

Pimientito

Ps the chords make a great improvisation sequence and I have tabbed them as scored.

RE: Aranjuez solo (in reply to Adam

As I say, a great deal of this movement is a guitar solo anyway. To extend it you can simply jump to the candenza and then end by repeating the first page.
Im not sure if I can be bothered to work the whole thing out as a solo right now but we will see if the rain stops this week or not :D

My inclination would be to make a duet of it, with the 2nd guitar playing the orchestral/piano part.

RE: Aranjuez solo (in reply to Pimientito

Well I just ran through it and it sounds quite nice so far :) One thing I noticed that seemed a little off was the high G in the first chord, second-to-last line, first page. Seems a bit dissonant and in Paco's version I only hear the C# as the high note. Maybe I'm just playing it wrong? Nice work again!

You are right. Thats obviously the most sensible approach, however it still doesnt get round the problem of what to do if you are by yourself and its requested. This is think about as close to a solo guitar version as i could make.

Adam. What I have done here is to mix the chord progression with the melody.
The same idea repeats on the third line from the bottom of the second page.
Its personal preference to a degree. If you prefer to use the straight chord and finish on the C# then use that instead. I have a pretty good technique of making it sound like 2 guitars by mixing rest strokes on the melody and free stokes on the chords but if thats difficult for you then use the version that sound best to your ears.

That clip brings back a lot of memory. It was the first time I had ever seen Paco on TV. He must have just recorded the concierto around that time. Here is the entire movement that Paco recorded with orchestra. So far the tab takes us up to 2.45

RE: Aranjuez solo (in reply to Pimientito

Still raining today so here is more Aranjuez.
The next solo starts at 4:35 (in the paco video). Its in E minor so I need to score something inbetween to make these parts fit together. I have taken this section from the Angel Romero score. Pacos fingering is modified. For reasons known only to God and Romero, the uniquely bizarre decision was made to score this section for solo guitar on two seperate and simultaneous staves. This tab is much less confusing.

On a side note its worth remembering that Rodrigo wrote this piece around the time that one of his children was born dead. Its for that reason this piece expresses love and loss so descriptively.

It's separate to make clear the difference between melody and accompaniment. If I remember correctly, Rodrigo's original score (which was published by Schott long before the Romero version) was that way too. Angel only added the fingering.

I just noticed that the sound seems better when played through YouTube rather than when encoded through the Forno site. Weird

No, it wasn't a Freudian slip. I should have gone to spec savers. I'm dyslexic and since I joined the site I could have sworn that was how it was spelled. I thought it was a bit weird, but then this Latin stuff is different. Sorry about that, I wasn't trying to bring the site into disrepute.

Mark, I noticed this skipped from page 2 to page 4 - is there a page 3 in the middle, or is this just special Pim counting?
