The Schism of the Conde Hermanos Empire

The legendary Media Luna headstock fueled relentless disputes and crowned many names, Domingo Esteso, Faustino Conde, “Viuda y Sabrinos” and “Conde Hermanos”. If you own the latter, you are officially in the vintage section. Conde is no longer “Hermanos”.

GSI is now showcasing blanca and negra models by “Felipe Conde” acting alone.

http://www.guitarsalon.com/product.php?productid=3526

[interestingly, however, GSI left the description as “Conde Hermanos” guitars obviously so that the new label be associated with the prestigious house now broken.

The new Felipe Conde negra (the apparent equivalent of its ancestor, the AF/R 25) is listed at a higher price $13,500.

Nationalism, politics, family, marketing, patriotism, heritage, business...lovely world isn't it? People can go out and buy a pair of Doc Martens made in China or Thailand, a BMW made in Kentucky and nobody is breaking those companies up. But the minute somebody contracts the Chinese for a Conde guitar, look out!

i thought they had already "schism-ed" into Gravina7, FelipeV and Atocha53, aka Conde Hermanos, Hermanos Conde and Conde Hermanos (again)

is this a 4th faction? or a re-branding of one of the above?

Estevan's uniquely witty come backs.... where were you sir? I missed your posts.

Hey, you did not download the ForoFlamenco album yet, did you? I need your vote {footnote n. 1}

{footnote n.1... I am setting things up for you to strike... and if it is as sharp and sarcastic in the Estevan way, then by all means, you have express permission to hurt my fragile artist's feelings in the process}

When the label says desde Madrid one would think it should not be made in Chengdu by Kashgar wage slaves. If they do that they should call them Silk Road Flamenco Trading Company. They should use Buddha images from Dunhuang on the labels. The curious connective irony in this is that Buddhism came from India and so did Flamenco.

The desde 1915 is also dubious, Domingo did not open his own shop until 1917, so I guess they count his time in Manuel's shop.

Maitreya Guitars- get enlightend while you play. Only 15000.00 Euro.

wow, cool story. very convincing. i will never ever touch a Conde again.

Kim Jung Il and I are tight, and the Northies work for a lot less so it's a no brainer. If you want to play Alegrias de Pyongyang you have to go through Estebanana.

I'm also working with Ahmadinnerjacket to pull together the Modelo Khomeni built outside Tehran. I'll let you in on the ground floor Arash, provided you spy for me.

Actually, i build my own version, which is a Green Guitar (not to be confused with Aron Green) - Modelo "Moussavi" , outsourced to factories in Afghanistan

Well...why not?

I once bought a handmade Kora in The Gambia, West Africa (straight from the Cow's Bum as they say...)

Sounded like sh*t actually...

(I was probably drunk at the time though.... )

How did you know that? Yes, they used to make those Andalucian guitars in the past, but now some guy named Stephen in US builds those for Prof. Diaz , for half of the afghan price - poor afghans, new age of globalization i guess.

RE: The Schism of the Conde Hermanos... (in reply to gj Michelob

While we are at spreading rumors, i give you some more which i heard from someone who heard these from someone else, but i don't want to mention names :

- Mariano had a fling with Felipe's Wife.
Felipe found out and got extremely mad, made his own shop and lable and told GSI and everyone else that Mariano now imports guitars from China. Good revange, Ole.

- The 2 brothers still love eachother. they just had a new business idea.
they noticed that the name Conde Hermanos is not that cool nowadays anymore like in the past (not in real world where still nearly every professional plays a Conde in his concert of course - but mainly because of some foroflamenco theories), anyway
so they thought its time for something new. so lets act like we are seperating, make new names, new shops, new lables and see what happens. if it doesn't work, we go back to Conde Hermanos again.

- Money-Grubbing Mariano really builds them in China now. Felipe hates that.
he decided that he doesn't want to have anything to do with China, and therefore made his own new shop and lable and told the true story to GSI. Ole Felipe! Buuuuh Mariano.

- Money-Grubbing Felipe is the one who builds his guitars in China, now with Fake Lable.
Mariano is still building in spain. But to make more Money Felipe decided to spread the rumor that Mariano is the one with the Chinese. Ole Mariano....Buuuuh Felipe !

- They are both building guitars in China with crap quality and crazy price and they are both fooling everyone.
in that case, Ole Estebanana...buuuuuuuuh Conde Hermanos

- They are both building in China, but because there is some unknown unbelievable magical luthier maestro in China, who can build guitars with Conde design with perfect precision and even better than Mariano and Felipe (and Sanchis) and for very good chinese price. But since, no one wants to see a name like "Maestro Ching Chang Chong" in the lable of his guitar, but a cooler name like JOSE (lately also names like Stephen, John, etc. are acceptable), so the Conde brothers decided to hide this chinese name , but the chinese builder got mad and told the truth.....
in that case OLE CHINA! Ole Conde!..... Buuuuuuh arrogant, expensive and lazy Spanish and US builders !

- The Widow of Faustino in Calle Gravina had the idea with China to make some extra bucks.

- Mariano had enough of guitars, he made enough money by fooling people and now wants to enjoy his life in bahamas.
So Felipe was left alone, therefore -> Felipe Conde and no more Conde Brothers

Correction Mic', i don't think Domingo Esteso ever used a "Half-Moon" on his head-stocks. But i've been known to be wrong on many occasions.

Interesting development: Felipe Conde must have acquired the "Conde Hermanos" business, and "bought-out" Mariano Conde. In fact, the old Conde Hermanos' website link now takes you to the "Felipe Conde" website which also reads "Conde Hermanos" . http://www.condehermanos.com/es/

Many of the old models have changed id number but seem to have remained the same. Of course it is a bit confusing now where (my) AF25 R is an FC28 it would seem, while the old n. 28 was an estudio Model.

Two additional interesting note:

1. The site advertizes strings by Conde and "Luthier"; I guess the latter really is the most suitable fit for a Conde.
2. After watching the Video on the website, at the end, a series of youtube videos stream-by, including one of our Don Soledad playing his orange Conde.

Don is sponsored by Conde ??? Not bad Senor Soledad

RE: The Schism of the Conde Hermanos... (in reply to gj Michelob

Just came back from Madrid. I had other things to do but squeezed in a trip to Conde in Atocha, not every media luna was great but a few really were very good.
In my experience good guitars can come from any Conde address. Although some great Condes will be costing half as much as others. The Felipe ones have more expensive tuners and perhaps a better overall finish? but these are just cosmetics. Generally I find the whole Conde business practice to be very confusing.

I had to resist quite hard from buying a great negra at Atocha but I really don't need another guitar. I didn't think it would happen to me but I've turned into someone who likes Condes, when you get a good one in your hands they're something else. A bit like the ubiqitous Fender stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul or Fender precision bass Conde's are just a great design. It seems good Condes can be made by various people, at various times and places.

I couldn't find the new c/Arrieta 4 shop, the website's got a few pictures with arrows pointing to it, so it must not have a sign up outside yet. I must have been looking straight at it.

gj Michelob: i loved the picture of sabicas on his flamenco puro album playing a conde? never new that barbero was one of the conde clan. sabicas use to play an esteo but not a conde (to me there is a difference).

maybe g.s.i. bumped up the price to try to get the world to think felipe is "the man" and those other conde kin are mere puppies. to be honest, the entire conde situation is nothing but a shell game--guess which address (shell) has the real conde (pea). as to the royal cypress scam.....
