Germany: 12 points!

Anybody watched it? Opinions?
Sure she is cute, and crazy, which makes her very likeable sometimes (sometimes also childish), but the main thing about Lena is IMO that she is extremely "marketable" or "sellable". There were more talented singers before and after her but less successful, because less "cute". I guess thats business. At least she is a good singer and has fun with it.

And Turkey place two! So, everything is fine with me

I think winning comes from the money spent on advertising.
Though i haven't heard the song i think it is usually like that.
For example when Paparizou won for Greece about 5 years ago, it was all heavily advertised.

Best ever, with very low advertising was Lordi in Athens next year.
They won, and all the ****s got out really angry that such "monsters" won the competition. Really funny!

I watched some of it on youtube, and now more fully understand why the world is in love with American music and try so poorly to imitate American artist. I absolutely hate Manga as they are a poor imitation of Linkin Park. Lena and Manga sound real bad singing in English (Vocal Tone), real bad-- they would not even come close to getting any airplay in the US.
If the awards were purely judged on the arrangements of the music being played not sung, I would say Manga were cheated for there instrumentation was more original than Lena's, and more sophisticated, however they had to sing and they sounded bad

Well, the UK did pretty well too...

I think the charm in the winner's song was her strong German accent...

If the same song had been sung by a native English speaker it would have bombed IMO.

Cute and catchy performance though!

(Bet it's a big hit at all the holiday clubs and beaches this summer!)

Although it is so clear that pop music has now become one big giant world melting pot with hardly any national characteristics to differentiate.

Anyway, I wish Lena the very best of luck and hope that she uses this sudden rise to international attention wisely.

Hey Deniz and Arash....here is the "Norman Tebbit Cricket Nationality" test...

In the World Cup, Deniz, if Germany was playing Turkey, whom would you cheer for?
And same for Arash...
If Germany is playing Iran, who will you be cheering for?

(Thank God Scotland failed to qualify...I honestly don't think I could have stood all the crap hype and the stupid songs if they had! )

cheers,

Ron

Being Turkish I would be cheering for Turkey all the way, and if they won especially against Germany, who have not behaved too kindly to Turks living there, I would be one happy Turk.

Funnily some people think she sings with british accent! Some things are british, like "day" where she says [dai], no? They showed the video to a british speaker and he said she has invented her own accent i think its good, it fits and shows some musicality. But shes hyped too much, the media always has to exaggerate things...

Im not a fan of pop music either. When it comes to music i am an ignorant fascist. I dont listen to others opinions, or let alone the "charts" or something. But this song is more on the good side of pop music IMO. Also Turkey, not very original, but OK song. There were 3, 4 other songs on the good side, which is a good rate for the Eurovision.

About football, im not that hard on nationalities. I usually pick the team that is playing an attractive style, or the underdog. Usually both is true for the turkish team, when comparing them to the german but they are never successful, so it is always a pain to support this team they are technically high skilled, but are a very chaotic team. Germany exactly the opposite.

No! I didnt watch it and haven't since I was about ten years old.....

on the other hand I have lots of opinions about it..

...but firstly I have a question.....what is the actual point of it??? Im trying to think of a comparison......

good music, as we all know can be beautiful, evocative, inspiring and most definately magical....whatever its genre.....but the stuff on there is absolutely bottom of the pile, manufactured bells and whistles...it makes me wanna puke. glitz and glamour, dreadful melodies, appaling dance routines, sickening chorus hooks....Outrageous front men/women....and are any of them actually any good???? I mean Really??? if this is actually a contest about the best SONG then its surely a contest about the best 'worst' song and seeing as music is one of the greatest gifts, the most magical of wonders that humans have had bestowed upon them then how dare these cretins **** with it like this.

It's almost like (from a male perspective, and at the risk of objectifiying women..i mean to complement them if anything)
having a beauty contest (which i think stink anywyay)....but instead of the most beautiful women (and even if that beauty is slim and tall or curvy or whatever) they have the most ugly deformed women infact the most hastily manufactured women, perhaps with botox gone wrong, perhaps with missing arms and extra eyes, one with no hair, one thats just a head, one that can only scream but cant talk, perhaps one is just a man dressed as a women.... and then we all watch and the winner is the one that is the least offensive to the eyes and ears.

perhaps this women analogy is a bad one but my point being... why take something so that can be so wonderful and beautiful and screw it over???

and the excuse "it's just a bit of fun" doesn't wash with me.

I truly believe that music presented in this way is the most disgusting form of propganda and really affects our collective consciousness and attitude towards music as a whole, but what can we do eh?

I'd probably hate this too but......if ya wanna have a song contest or music contest...why not do it properly???
Have actual musicians (perhaps even pros) performing...why did paco never represent spain?? or miles davis never play for america?( but thats prob another political debate right there)

anyway in conclusion **** the eurovision song contest!!!!

Stu,

The ESC is a dinosaur from the early days of television broadcasting that keeps on being flogged so long as there are still a few euros to be made out of it.

In the early 60's it was seen as a glitzy extravaganza and was eagerly watched by millions of television viewers, who were just as awed to be able to see "live" television pictures from other countries as with the show itself.

I remember around that time watching in amazement as the first flickering black-and-white Transatlantic pictures came in from the States via Telstar, (which was only available for 20 minutes at a time, since the satellite was orbiting and not geosynchronous..so had to be tracked by the giant Goonhilly radio telescope style dish! )

So all this stuff was "High Tech" and fascinating!

TV in the early 60's was the main source of entertainment for most families, many of whom had only been to a big theatre or concert once or twice in their lives! (if at all).
Also few folk had ever been out of the UK. (except for those in the Military)

In my house in the early 60's, the three highlights of the year were the Eurovision Song Contest, the Miss World Contest and the Royal Variety Performance.
People eagerly awaited them.

The streets were practically deserted on these evenings.

God knows why they keep it running now.

cheers,

Ron

I never watched this eurovision de la BS , with all those low level singers (well, except ONCE i watched RTL Superstar in Germany because of that Iranian Guy who finally won , even though everytime i was forced also to watch Dieter Bohlen ),,,, but anyway i somehow like Stephan Raab, so good for Germany and Turkey

---

Ron, Deniz nailed it.
In Middle Eastern or other Teams from that area, the players are usually good technically on their own, but horrible teamwork and no organisation (just like all the other people from that area ): i mean take one iranian guy and he can be a genius, but take 2 of them and tell them to do something together and it will end up in a catastrophy. Everyone wants to be the captain

Can you imagine a sort of "Meeting of the Spirits" comprised of 3 of the top Middle Eastern oud players then?

(Mind you the Paco, John and Al one wasn't completely unlike that actually. )

cheers,

Ron

LOL Stu. Post of the month! Somewhere, a botox went wrong, extra eyed, missing armed and no haired woman with only one head is very angry at you now. Perhaps if she had 6 breasts you could play something on her?
Anyways, thats just the style i fear, pop music. I dont like most of the stuff presented there, BUT you have to see that there many often unknown people get the chance to give a performance. Good publicity. Lena being the most extreme example as she was nothing more than a student six months ago. No gigs, no band, nothing (AFAIK).
But thats no excuse to that crappy music shows of course, but still some 3,4 good musicians are always there.
