Escudero left us on Friday

It looks like the sad news hasn't reached foroflamenco until now.

Last year I received false reports about Mario's death, but I'm afraid this time it's confirmed. He passed away last Friday, November 19th.

Many people here requested his address and send him very kind messages which his nurse assures me were much appreciated. Mario's memory was nearly gone and he was only aware that he used to play guitar "a bit", so he was overwhelmed by all the attention...that's this here group I'm talking about, and you guys did it just in time.

Deflamenco ran a special on Mario last January which is has been republished in honor of this great guitarist. The English version is up at:

If you can, pass on our condolences from the forum to his surviving family and friends.

Simon, I'm on the Ondajerez radio program (via Internet) every Monday and last night the moderator asked me to say some words about Mario since I'd known him personally. Among other things I mentioned that I knew a lot of people who remembered and admired him...I was thinking about this group especially...and sent condolences to the family.

A sobering piece of news Estela.

I would have said "sad", but that would just have been PC since I didn't know the man personally.
I'm sure you know what I mean nevertheless.

When I heard Sabicas died, I thought about a lot.
That these hands that could bring much life to a guitar, were sadly now motionless.

This was not like money or property, or something that he could leave to his family, but died with him.

This is what we have to respect about human beings, the "non tangibile" things that some of them bring in to this world through hard work and belief in themselves.

Things which cannot be directly passed on through heritage, but is passed on to the larger world, to those who have ears to listen and be inspired by their work.

Mario Escudero is certainly a giant in the world of Flamenco guitar.

And his memory will still live on, long after we have all shaken off this mortal coil!

As someone who buried my mother this year, please convey my greatest respects to his family in their sad time.

Ron, what you wrote is moving and beautiful. I'm sorry about your mother.

I'm going to forward your message to Mario's eldest son who lives in the US and reads English.

I'm saddened to find this out. I started off playing rock/blues guitar for many years. I stumbled upon an old Escudero album that was part of my grandfather's LP collection.

After hearing it, I never played the electric guitar again and took up my quest to learn flamenco. The most beautiful music I'd ever heard. To be more specific, it was Escudero's Impetu that cast me off.

Please pass my sympathies to the Maestro's family.

Zata,

My very first intro to Flamenco guitar was when I bought my first flamenco LP record, guessing, but it must have been about 66' or 67'.

I took it home and put it on, since then I've been hooked.
That LP was 'Nino de Alicante and his Troope' (Spelling?).

I didn't know at the time, but it was Mario. Fantastic playing. very clean, fast and very Flamenco.

Without a doubt, that record changed my life and set me on this course.

My regrets and sympathy to his family.

Jim.
