RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to Doitsujin

Open Office is wonderful, but I can't afford to work for free and the power company doesn't accept good intentions in exchange for electricity and groceries get paid for with good old fashioned fiat currency.

Doit, I hope you aren't not implying that our metronome is a gimmick.

We will certainly NOT be charging a huge fee for the thing, but I'm not really interested in working long hours for free.

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

Works and sounds great!

I dunno nothin’ about how these things work and if you’re already past the point where can, or even want to, add features, but something that I’ve never seen in a metronome and think would be a really, really useful tool is some kind of subida feature. It’d be great to be able to practice tempo increases at a steady rate, and it’d be good for gradually warming up technique drills and stuff.

So, some kind of deal where you select a starting tempo, a target tempo and the time span that you’d like the increase to take place over…..

Again, I have zero idea how this stuff works and how easy or difficult the design of such a feature would be, but I think that would be a serious mo-fo!

you have the count in 12's. Would be cool to have an option to turn that off if you want, also the timer thing would be cool to be able to shut that off too

I agree, the timer's good for practicing exercises but I'd rather not know how long I'm playing for if I'm writing or just playing for enjoyment. I also think it would be good for beginners to be able to practice just by listening and not being tempted to look at the accented beats.

I second the suggestion of a subida feature, that's a great idea.

Either way I want one!

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to Ricardo

quote:

But then I noticed you have also the 6's and Jaleos. For me the randomness and improvisation in the shorter compases like these is, well, TOO random if that makes sense. Not sure why because what was happening in the 12 beat compas was perfect. It seems there is never a groove at all in the shorter compases and the changes keep coming. Not sure what is involved to fix that.

Only other curious thing was the Tanguillo, for me the way I feel the beat is not what your count or metronome click is doing. Relative to what you have there I feel 1 yes, but the second strong beat is the "&" between your counts 2 and 3.....so that the accent on 3 is felt like an off or up beat. And going to 6 makes it cuadrao, so that happens again for counts 4, then between counts 5 and 6

We do have a solution for this in the works Ricardo. Its going to take a little while to implement but it will provide a means for the program to stay in a groove for a while and then do a "fill" type of thing. Each groove will be random but much more subtle than what we have at the moment. PArt of this Beta Phase is to get some reaction and I completely agree with you on this point. But we also feel that the accident we created in those jaleos and sixes patterns are kind of cool and we are going to keep them as a preset. I actually love playing to them because they push me to do some pretty cool stuff when I am improvising along with them. Most people do however need something a bit more tame to accomplish their goals.

The tanguillo is counted in 4 here, but we will have it selectable to count in 6's.
Tanguillo,as I think of it, is 4 quarter notes with a subdivision of eighth note triplets. Each beat is divided into 3 parts, so there really is no "&", thats what creates that "delayed" or "drunk" contra feeling. This is a public beta, we have been in a private beta with professional dancers, guitarists and singers for about 6 months. They have all given their blessings. We have had a number of "beginners" too, mostly my private students. They have learned to keep compas quicker than normal and have nearly all stated that they understand things better by using Doctor Compas.

We can easily create other types of grooves now that the engine and program are working pretty solid. We will certainly add new patterns and grooves to accomodate users ideas and needs (within reason) after we solve a few things we think are important like EQ, perhaps a reverb, and a couple of secret things I can't talk about because they will take things to a whole different level as far as "natural" sounding goes.

Someone mentioned Solo Compas.... tempo varies, there is often an annoying djembe or dumbek in there and you can't turn it off. You also can't change the tempo easily and you can't do it without the sound quality taking a hit. For the time in which it first came out Solo Compas was a great product, but if you purchase all of those CDs legally , they are pretty expensive. Of course no one product is going to do it for everyone. We will be making lots of improvements and thats the point of the Public Beta.

I hope I don't sound too defensive Ricardo, we do really appreciate the helpful comments and thats the reason for the public beta phase. I knew you would be a tough customer and we will do our best to have your blessing on the metronome.

Score!!!! you are right. we screwed that up. We just need to start the numbers from 12 instead of 1. I can't believe no one caught that already.

great idea, we will try to make a subida mode that will speed up for a user selectable amount of compas and end with a strong llamada. how about that?

They will have to be a separate preset and may not be possible. Maissaim will have to use his experience with time travel to go into the future and see how we accomplished it and return with the info. The problem is.... if he tampers with the future as he is TOO TEMPTED to do, he could ruin everything.

Okay we will put it in the preferences to turn on or off those display elements.

Good suggestions.

Understandable. You should though make an online(non-downloadable) version free to your website subscribers. They need some extra benifits for being one of your subscribers. They can use their lessons login for access.

There is something new and revolutionary coming in next few weeks for my website. Trust me... it will be something that no one has thought of.

I can't offer a free version of this to subscribers because I have partners involved with this project and it wouldn't be fair to them. We may make a scaled down "online" version and beg for people to click ads and take donations.

We have spoken of the possibility of this.

We can probably also turn this into a plugin for DAWs so it could be used as a "more natural click track" for recording artists. It would sync to the tempo of the DAW of course and make multitrack recording easier for some people. Not a huge market for that though. We have to wait and see.

Sorry making so many posts....

We do want all of your comments. We would like to incorporate as many of the great ideas as we can. I also know that the price we arrive at for this will be a VERY important decision. Once we get the first release ready we can begin to discuss that.

The Foro is an amazing community and we wanted to give you all an opportunity to put in your feature requests before we finalize anything.

Jason's flamenco lessons site is already great and such good value. I don't think it's fair to ask for free extras on his other business ventures.

Sounds like you stole my goddamned idea...

...and then made it better.

I was just thinking click track, but yeah, pimp it out to the max. The idea first came to me a while back when I was working on yer standard alegrias deal with a silencio to slow-starting escobillia building up to bulerias de Cadiz…

Look man, it was just a suggestion for a metronome program. No need to go and eff up the whole space/time continuum deal just for a software tweak. It’s just not worth it.

We figured out a way to do it in the near future. He made it back yesterday back from the future a day earier than expected with ONLY the info we needed. At least thats what he said yesterday. If he wins the lottery anytime soon we will know differently.

Solea numbers are working correctly now....ooooops accents still wrong. Damn.

Word to the wise - lock the feature set even before development starts. Publish the price on launch.

Beta release is for testing only, not feature requests or pricing. Hope this helps - or you will never finish, it will just escape... as it just has

Well, multi track was the next way I was going to go with Flamenco Master with randomised palmas and (I have to confess) occasional Jaleo interjections.

Anyway, I made my first million out of it and got bored with any further development plans, so just gave it away for free to the Forum as I was too busy spending the dosh on women and wine.

cheers,

Ron

Solea is correct after all. You have to quit the browser and restart it for the updates to take effect.

Agreed, but the program was counting to 6 not to 4. Just to be clear I am thinking dotted quarter note gets the beat, not a normal quarter note. So your "click" sound should be only making 4 sounds per compas....not 6.

Oh, yeah, the solea thing WAS ok for escobillas but there should be different palmas. Maybe you could make "escobilla" settings that have the 1,4,7,10 as downbeats....with some typical grooves for solea, alegrias, tientos, etc....

wow.. friggen sweet man!
I will definitely buy it. Cool look, cool sound and the groove is not impossibly buried under syncopated dumbeks like on the Solo Compas CDs... love it!

I got some wicked funky cajon licks in the seguiriyas

Groovy! Sounds great and works really well. The Solea felt a little bit to slow for some of my falsetas. I tried to click on the BPM to see if i could increase it a little. Being able to do that would be great.

i really like it jason, its awesome. i think the random feature is really good helps to feel the compas by hearing different variations while practicing

i cant wait for the full version

i am using firefox, and i have had some problems, but it does work for me, and works best when i close other apps, which suggests its my small amount of ram that is getting in the way, if your having problems, just shut down everything else and try that

ToddK, we are going to try and make a plugin version. VST,Audio Units and RTAS...

we need to do some other stuff first, but it will be able to spit out audio files and the tempos are perfectly in sync with DAWs so it can be used right away for a click track in recording apps.... just a couple extra steps unit we get plugin versions.

Kris,
You can't change tempo while its running.... this is key in keeping rock steady timing.
Hit stop, change the tempo...... you can go radical if you want. Solea at 300bpm, Bulerias at 40bpm..... the quality of sound doesn't change.

Thanks, I worked it out. I'll give the solea at 300 bpm a go.
