Doctor Compas Public Beta Version

An online Public Beta version of my flamenco metronome software is available for testing for free at the link below. Please leave comments there about how its running on your system and problems you might experience. Doctor Compas™ has been a lot of work but my friend Maissam and I have managed to create a program that improvises cajon and palmas in compas for all the major flamenco palos.

http://www.doctorcompas.com/

You have to wait a few seconds for the program to load and it should pop up.

Thats wicked! First i thought this would be a joke post, because of the doctor name :) sort of a program that shouts at you if you get out of compas.
But this idea is also nice.

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

Nice simple interface, and good soundquality. (Very sonorous and timbric colours)
It does what it needs to do.

When changing compas and palmas from ON to OFF the application stops responding.
I've tried to duplicate it, and out of 10 times restarting the application again it happened 4 times.
Also stopping the application, not using it for several minutes using it again gives performance problems on my pc.

Perhaps somebody can duplicate this?

There is no download link, this is a web application right now. If you have java installed, wait a minute and it should start running.

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

wow, really cool app.

the patterns are awesome and really groovy. some sections of the cajon playing remind of jojo mayer's playing, whatever that style is called.

the sound quality is nice but it'd be cool if the cajon had a little more deep end.

it's really unstable right now. it's not working with firefox. but it works with internet explorer. i'm scared to switch the palo or press the stop/start button because it might crash.

congratulations to you both. Your creation will be very useful. Visual metronome is the best tool to understand the compas before using a todo compas track.
Seeing the strong beat in red is a super idea.

It work fine with my nettop. XP/firefox
but i can't adjuste the tempo.

will be able to use it whitout internet connexion?

EDIT: i have reinstalled JAVA with the latest version (the link in your website) and now it worked.

wow, thats a great tool. and great sound quality.

Guys, it takes a few minutes to start. You may have to be a bit more patient. It works for me with google chrome and ie8.

Now it works for me.. I updated Java.

Well,.. why is it only online based? You want to make some bucks with it in future?
For free it would be awesome! ;.)

So..is it going to be for free or not?

It won't be free, because it took almost 2 years of work in our free time. The final version will be downloadable and will run without an internet connection.

To change the tempo you have to stop the metronome and then change the tempo.

We will be adding a simple EQ so that users can "season" the sound for their systems. That is in the works.

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

just got it to work on firefox. i have been grooving to this thing since i found it this morning. i like how there's a click track.

maybe for the future, some jaleos so i don't feel so lonely when i play?

are the bpm settings accurate? 160 feels a bit slow. or is because it just grooves so much it feels easier?

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

before releasing the final buyable version, you should also consider to add some additional functions like

programmable paterns and rythm formulas acc. the liking of the user on different tracks

recording function to MP3
(so that you can record a complete backing track for a piece for yourself)

like a software version of Oscar Herreros metronome , but with better sound quality/instruments/etc.

because most of us have compas loops with different speeds for all palos for practicing, but not a real flexible and programmable software with good sound quality of instruments. like a CUBASE for flamenco. so that would be more interesting for more people.

just a suggestion

mp3 recording is being considered. we do have a VERY crude programmable section but it needs a lot of work to make it easy for the end user to make patterns.

How much does that Oscar Herrero thing cost?

249 euro's....andyou are able to replace the samples by your own.
The new version, is only software based, don't know how much it costs.

The hardware is cheasy and a very lousy display, but it is loud for a beatbox type of thingy.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, no random jaleos which dont make sence

it was very expensive. something like $300 if i remember correctly.
therefore not many people bought that device, because of the price.

recently i saw a 50% price reduction somewhere in an online shop.

however, that thing is a hardware. you can programm it, take it with you and connect it to speakers where you like.

I used it yesterday morning to arrange a tremolo falseta for Seguiriyas composed by my friend Alex Conde on the piano. The recording is just raw on the my MacBook with Doctor Compas running on the same computer as the recording program.

We will NOT be adding jaleos. Don't worry.

The thing is about patterns.... to simulate practicing with human beings playing palmas things need to be random yet "in compas". When I play a gig, I do NOT know what the people playing palmas are going to do next. I have to REACT to them. I trust that they will be in compas. This is the sort of tool Massaim and I are trying to make here. Having palmas programmed by the guy who is playing guitar is a one dimensional point of view.
However..... we do realize the guitarist condition of needing to control everything in the universe. So for those who wish to program we will have some sort of programmable interface thingy. We don't show it now because its really scary and the few who have experienced it ran in fright and we haven't seen them again in quite some time.

Thats cool!
For me it is one of the problems to get out of compas if the palmas all of a sudden change and they are not as "usual".

I my opinion it should not be programmable from the users point of view. You guys have much experience what'll work and what not and how to make it groovy, and those grooves are groovy.

How much does i.e. open office cost? How many options are behind that? How much time did the development cost? So..in comparison to that..how much should you charge? :-)

Yep,.. Oscar Hereros Metronome is a fancy extremely overpriced gimmick. Who needs that seriously for that price?
Well,..at least it fits to Herrero who is somehow weird.. Watching him playing always reminds me on a banker or an insurance salesman holding a guitar by accident.

Noooo
This could be the first opportunity for a user to create custom palmas patterns without having access to palmeros. This would be the only thing that makes it interesting for me because i already have alot of solo compas loops and also other software that does compas. When recording a falseta i dont see much sense in using random palmas. But as a play along it could be nice.

It worked well on my computer and the variety of rhythms and covered palos is great! It would be cool to have like 6-10 bulerias patterns which you can choose separately and put them together.

This is really great! I like the improvising, makes it more fun, not quite a Juerga but a virtual one.

I would buy this.

I have the Graff martinez Flamenco metronome. It cost €18 but it doesn't work well on my computer (a Mac) , it doesn't keep accurately measured time. (I know I'm not the only person to experience this)

Wow very cool man! Cyborg Soniquete!

Ok I went through them all. I really was impressed with the first buleria, even though you have the count in 12's. Would be cool to have an option to turn that off if you want, also the timer thing would be cool to be able to shut that off too. But I can play with that and the way it changes is nice. I am able to cross the 12's with 6's without a problem like we have with many compas loops in 12's.

But then I noticed you have also the 6's and Jaleos. For me the randomness and improvisation in the shorter compases like these is, well, TOO random if that makes sense. Not sure why because what was happening in the 12 beat compas was perfect. It seems there is never a groove at all in the shorter compases and the changes keep coming. Not sure what is involved to fix that.

Only other curious thing was the Tanguillo, for me the way I feel the beat is not what your count or metronome click is doing. Relative to what you have there I feel 1 yes, but the second strong beat is the "&" between your counts 2 and 3.....so that the accent on 3 is felt like an off or up beat. And going to 6 makes it cuadrao, so that happens again for counts 4, then between counts 5 and 6.

For me that is important because you can feel both the triplet type tanguillo and mix in the "galloping" feel tanguillo to the same beat and tempo, which happens sometimes. maybe you could have tanguillo1 and tanguillo2 like you have for some of the other palos?

Anyway, crazy fun tool.

Ricardo

RE: Doctor Compas Public Beta Version (in reply to JasonMcGuire

I like it. I checked the Solea and the visual numbers (red) for the solea accent are in the wrong place. I mean you feel the 12 as the end of the compas cycle, whereas for bulerias you feel the 12 as the beginning if you are counting in 12s for dancers, but they should both have the same red accents (I think I have absorbed the sixes info I have read here!)

The very first red accent on the 1 is good though, cause that is what you start counting on to get the feel of ending on the 12. But then it carries on and accents the 4,7,9,11, and then 1 again. I think that can throw a newbie off.

If I am wrong about this, then it is back to the drawing board for me and I will kill myself.
