We saw him play in Madrid last year. Phenomenal accompanist. So clean and clear.

Henry, I can't find any more info about it. But am saving from now on.

Margenta, no, you can easily survive in Sanlucar without speaking Spanish. It is certainly a better option if you at least understand most of what they are talking about though. The courses are in Spanish. Gerardo's teaching vocabulary could easily be exhausted on one page. Still can't really imagine how Antonio will do his course but I expect more talking. Are you thinking of joining us?

same here hope i can afford both courses, id really like if we could work with a singer and get feedback on this, this is how other cante courses ive seen are run, el carbonero shows the essentials of the toque and then the student works with the singer present to accompany the cante. are you going again this year matic?

Yes. I am actually thinking of attending the Carrion's curso only. Depending on the prices.
One other option is that he is going to sing himself.

Yes, Ailsa, he's awesome. He's been in Sanlucar both these two years I've been there (probably years before too), accompanying on fiestas and having a good time with us. His daughters are super cute . Their trio dance coreography por bulerias was always a blast.
It was just a matter of time when he's going to teach as well if you ask me.

I'm not sure I can because I have some large expenses this spring, but you guys seem to have a superb time and it looks like a great course this years, so I'll need to keep it in mind.

Hey,
That's awesome that Carrion is doing his own course, how the hell they gonna fit all that in on one day?!?! He was the first flamenco guitarist I ever met in Spain in a Peña in Almería on an exchange visit. Obviously bumped into him again in Sanlúcar, bloody gitanos follow you everywhere!
He's got awesome strength and experience in his hands! I reckon he'll teach a bit, then you'll practise with him singing like you say Matic.
Going to see him in the next month is on my list to do now! Hopefully he'll be getting out and playing about.

I don't know if I'll do the course but I can imagine I probs would.. we'll see.. I've missed one year already, can't make a habit of it!!
Henry, what d'you reckon of his cante CD?

Jesus Mendez is teaching the cante curso!!!! :O

The bad news (for me) is that it's necessary to take gerardo's curso so you can take carrion's.... (and the same for tino's as usual)
But that means: Gerardo+Antonio+Tino=500€.
That's bad. Like almost hilarious. I never felt so poor in my life.

Now I really don't know what to do. I can't afford all three, without Tino's repetition I would be lost, but I would really like to do the accompaniment one.

Good news suddenly turn to bad news.

That sure is a lot of dosh. And an awful lot to learn in a week, especially considering all the manzanilla that needs drinking too.

I'm envious tho - had hoped to go this year but there's a baby due in the family that week so I'm on support duty.

Gerardo should just teach cante accompaniment of Carrion singing in the advanced class. Oh well, looks like he doesn't want the guitar class empty with everyone just taking from Carrion.

An idea would ask if you can "audit" without your guitar one of the classes you can't afford to pay for. Talk to gerardo though, not his wife.

RE: Sanlucar 2010: Antonio Carrion (in reply to Matic

I have been saving since Christmas so I will definately be there this year.
I agree with Ailsa. The Gerardo course plus Antonio course plus repetition plus concert plus fiesta plus contratiempo plus beach party for 6 consecutive days and nights is not humanly possible. Those who did try it last year didnt end up doing all the courses.

I agree with you Matic that its a bit pointless doing the Gerardo course without doing Tinos repetiton. Also the repetiton class coincides with Antonios course.
Why can't you do the Antonio course without doing Gerardos course? I thought it was Tinos course that you couldnt do without doing Gerardos.

It might be a good idea to write to Isa about this and try to schedule it better...
If Antonios course over runs (which I'm certain it will) you will miss a lot of the repetition anyway.
If all else fails it will mean a team effort to record Tinos repetiton class for you while you are doing the Antonio course. That way students can swap audio/video of both courses.

wow thats a toughie, im just after looking at the schedule. id really like to do carrions course but i think my hands would not be able for 4hrs of guitar a day...

the other option as pimientito said is to swap files and or teach/ transfer to each other the material before the juerga at night?

The odds of anything getting done before the juerga are pretty slim. Its lucky if you get time to get anything to eat.
An idea that occured to me was for students to bring a small external hard disc or an 8GB pen drive and at the end of the week simply download the material off a laptop.
Errol and I were talking about this last year. Instead of banning video and limiting audio recordings, it would be much better for Gerardo to pay someone to MAKE video recordings of the course and sell them on the final saturday morning. Im sure many students would buy them.

RE: Sanlucar 2010: Antonio Carrion (in reply to Pimientito

Well I was first thinking of only doing Carrion's class this year for two reasons. First is money (a friend and I are planning 2 or 3 months in Andalucia this summer so I need to save a bit more than just what I expect to spend in Sanlucar), besides that, I have so much Gerardo's material from last 2 years to study I don't really need more for a while (so the first curso on the priority list is actually Carrion's).
I will definitely be there because I can't wait to see mis amigos again. I will contact Isa or someone and see if taking only Carrion's curso could be an option after all. Otherwise it's only FIESTA for me! Which is cool anyway.

If you ask me it would be more than reasonable to exchange the recorded material at the end of the week.

Well, I first need to heal my hands anyway.

I won't be able to participate this year but I'd love to save up and attend in a year or two.

I've got a couple questions for those that have attended (I couldn't find the info on the website).

What is the lodging situation? Is it included in the price of the course and, if not, how much extra does it cost?

Also, are there other expenses (outside of airfare and transportation, of course) that need to be accounted for?

I'm trying to figure out how much this would cost me total so I can start convincing my wife it's a good idea.

Students get a discount rate at the local hotels. "los Helechos" is where most people stay. It costs about EUR 250 for the week if you have a room to yourself. You can ask around and find people to share a room which reduces your costs to under 200 Euros for accommodation. Breakfast is 2 euros a day and you need another 150 euros for food and drink (depending on how much you drink).
Lunch costs around 10 euros and you need at least 20 euros per night.
I would say you need to allow a minimum of EUR 750 for course fees , food, drink, accommodation etc. for the week PLUS your travel costs to Sanlucar.

Dont forget there is a free concert every night and considerable party activity included.

RE: Sanlucar 2010: Antonio Carrion (in reply to Matic

Can anyone who attended in previous years tell me how the whole Gerardo/Carrion/Repetition class scheduling mess was actually handled by people? I'm trying to figure out how I should do it myself. I really want to take the accomp class but it seems doing Gerardo without the repetition class is way too difficult.

Also I already asked in my own thread but...is really noone from the Foro going this year? Would be too bad, since it's my first time.
