12" Vinyl Album Covers

Does anybody miss these?

To me, it was part of the whole record buying deal!

I was watching a bit on TV about the graphic artists who put together those great and iconic album covers of the 60's and 70's.

One of them said.."It was great, 'cos you put the LP on and sat on the floor looking at the cover and reading the notes and pictures on the back...
Nowadays, it's just a miserable bit of paper with low resolution printing.."

I had to admit, I loved holding all those LP covers and can remember getting Fantasia Flamenca arriving on my doorstep all the way from Spain and putting it on and looking at all those little photos of Paco playing in different locations.

Or the pictures of Camaron and Paco in the other albums.

We've gained a lot by CD and mp3 download technology, but lost a lot IMO also in the delight and appreciation of stuff.

Maybe not?

Depending on your age..

cheers,

Ron

I think someone else was thinking the same thing as you Ron.
Thats why they made these older Paco and Camaron albums into Vinyl again

I never had these things... But I had a Boss who sweared on them. He had a custom made super precise player for these vinyl plates and was a real freak... He told me this sound-quality can only be beaten by going somewhere and listen by your own ears. Well,... it was a mixed institute where I worked.. Half medicine science half biology science... It was connected to the pathology where we had a lab for radioactive procedures... These people were even more strange then ME!! Believe me... It was crazy.. The people there also..
One funny ..or not so funny story I wanna tell you.

The radioactivity lab was a small room at the end of a long corridor. The door had a big glass window that people from outside could look inside. In front of the door were the usual machines to check if you are contaminated with something..And to the left and right to this door were a bigger lab where they mainly researched on crazy ****.. you dont wanna know.

Well,.. because these rooms were in the pathology.. it was pretty common that they brought dead people in these boxes in for autopsy. Cutting them open, taking things out..lungs, heart,..liver..and so on. The lab I worked in was in the cellar level and to the corridor the rooms for the dirty work were connected. So,..sometimes when I went down the corridor the doors were open and I saw organs and people laying on metal-tables.. And I saw the big waste bins where they put the "material" they need to burn.. Basically everything ... They used to clean up always very well. But if I took a look in between..man forget it.. if you arent student of medicine..you dont wanna see that.

Well,.. so far no big deal. One day in winter the sun went down around 5 and I had to work with radioactivity till 8pm. Everybody already went home..just me were still working in the small lab 10m2. The lights in the other lab and the corridor was shut off. So I wasnt able to watch far in the dark corridor from the glass in the door.
And guess what happened.. When I looked outside in the darkness towards the rooms with the dead people... someone moved from left to the right in front of my door in the darkness just 1 meter in front of me... MAN!!!! I NEARLY DIED COZ OF THAT ****ING SOCK!! It really happened.. no joke.. It was shocking horrible.

The person who was walking around there in the darkness turned out to be a phD student who forgot something in the lab... Why didnt he used light? ?? Not so funny if you would have been me..
Well,.. the other days leaving the labs as last person in the evening... werent feeling much better.
Im happy Im not working there anymore...

Ok,..now back to vinyl plates!

Cripes!

It's good that we have strange people around to do those sorts of jobs.

Btw, Ron. I buy almost all my music on vinyl. It helps to like stuff from 60-80's, but you'd be surprised how much new and 'hip' music is released on vinyl. I'm not a collector. I just like vinyl.

The covers are half the reason, the other is just the satisfying feel of using them. You don't skip around as much. You put it on.. and listen through the whole side.

I noticed a funny thing while measuring the electricity usage of my stereo. The CD player eats 20W even while not playing, my vinyl player eats less than 1W even while rotating a heavy glass platter. All new technology isn't necessarily for the better.

Flamenco 12"s are way too rare. I've had some luck. I got Fuente y Caudal, Zyriab, Almoraima, Solo Quiero Caminar and Castro Marin of Pacos, all from the same little record shop in stockholm, for a very reasonable price and in excellent condition. It's good news that they are making re-releases though :-)

My parents have some PDL vinyl discs and covers. I never knew...

I dont even need to go back in time that much. I experience the same, but with CDs and mp3s. I remember a time where i ordered flamenco CDs. I soaked up everything of the CD. Nowadays i have mp3s, and i dont have listened even half of them! When i get a new album i listen to the Solea por Bulerias and Bulerias first and skip the rest or hear it much much later. This has something to do with having too much music around yourself (that itself has something to do with better technology). And its really taking away a bit of joy.

This reminds me of selling for 2 euros an almost new and well kept Eurythmics white vinyl LP with Annie Lennox on it in a basement sale. I don't have a large collection of vinyls but that was my most beautiful LP. I still don't know why I sold it. What I hate most from buying CDs is receiving them with cracked plastic jewel cases and teeth. It seems there is a vinyl revival as I've seen recently chain record shops are selling vinyl LPs and there are more and more turntables on the market.

Hi Kris,

Yeah...I've still got a few of those ones there.
Thing is, the LP's are not in great nick because I used to keep lifting and lowering the arm by hand to repeat passages at 16rpm to learn them.
So lots of clicks and pops now..

That Sabicas album cover is a cracker!
You couldn't have picked a more sickly colour and silly looking pose!
Sanlucar looks pretty cool in the Mundos and Formas one though!

cheers,

Ron

My Dad has done the same thing to most of these

I do like the old Lp covers. They carried the trend on with those cheap cassette tapes you can buy in the service stations throughout spain. You know the ones, Pepe Pinto with a giant carnation pinned to his lapel etc... I love that stuff. Lol!

The one with Niño Ricardo accompanying is really really good! (one fandango less and I'd give it another "really" )
