The weight loss challenge?

Has there been one before? I want to loose 15 pounds before March 31 - and I won't start trying until January 1. Not because I am really overweight, mainly for cycling competition - I am a bit too filled out around the gut with all the booze and treats (more to come!)

Are there any takers? I bet we can all loose a few!

I need to join this challenge. I've just had to let out the waistband on my bata de cola

I don't weigh myself, so I don't know how much I need to lose. I'd rather measure it in inches lost!

Cathulu, I "suffer" through this proposed diet every couple of years. If followed strictly it will yield great results (in addition to curb one's bad eating habits).

I just completed it in November and lost 15 pounds in two weeks (and did not have any time to exercise(!!).

the legendary Scarsdale Diet:

[Disclaimer: I am quite agressive when it comes to fight weight. However, each one may react differently to it, while it may not be suitable for patients with certain conditions... hence: try it at your own peril.

I lost 40 pounds in just one afternoon!

Last Friday, to be exact... It was freezing and I was wearing gloves.

I paid for something in a shop with a fiver and when I got home I realized that the two twenties I had in the same pocket were missing...just some loose change left.

When I pulled the fiver out it must have ben wrapped around the 20's and they had fallen out, but I hadn't felt it due to the damn gloves.

A call to the shop, of course, proved fruitless.

A thousand curses.

Of course, being Scottish I felt like hanging myself.

cheers,

Ron

Another reason to join the Euro-zone

cathulu: during the Easter fasting period (which I observe although I'm an atheist) I generally loose about 9.5 to 10kg (20 to 22 pounds), so the bet is on starting on the 17th of February and ending on the 4th of April

It's karma Ron - you'll see. On the day I moved to Spain I found 200 Euros in bills on a mountain path, no-one around and no way of identifying the owner so I kept it. 3 years later I walked away leaving 300 Euros in an ATM in Granada

Thanks Simon,

That helps in knowing I'm not the only one...

Although I'm kinda joking, it still touches a raw nerve every time I think about it.

It sorta hits me on various levels, like....

1. The "Ordinary Human" response... like £40 just gone for nada...(damn, sh*t, f*ck!!)

2. The "Christian" response....perhaps some really poor person may have found it and it will help them over Christmas time. (ha! ha!...like sh*t! )

3. The "Scottish/Presbyterian" response....that God is very displeased with you for being such a careless waster and will punish you further, considering how your parents looked after the pennies in order to look after you.

4. The "Glasgwegian" response.....This could have bought 60 deep fried Mars Bars, ya bloody eedjitt ye!!.

Anyway... a Merry Christmas/WinterFest/PaganFest/GeneralAgnostoFest etc etc.. everybody!

Have a good time and try not to lose any money!

(I think I'm just gonna git drunk!...(best just to keep things simple these days I reckon) )

cheers,

Ron

I have to say as someone with a bit of medical knowledge that this isnt actually the best way to lose weight if you want to keep it off.

Cathulu -apart from not eating a boars head during this diet you should be aware of a couple of points.
When you lose a lot of weight on a crash diet you are only losing
1. The contents of your bowel
2. Water

A diet like the one GJ posted will certainly help you lose weight as it has a lot of fruit, vegetable fibre and very little carbohydrate. This is basically cleansing the content of the bowel which is certainly very healthy and will certainly make you slimmer. However you are not burning off body fat. It also means that as soon as you have a couple of good meals, you put a lot of the weight back on again.
Its the reason why crash diets dont work. A boxer can lose weight in the gym by sweating out body fluid but he will gain it again with fluid after the fight.

The ONLY WAY to burn off body fat is to use more energy than you consume. Unless you are an athlete it is not actually possible to burn off more than a couple pounds per week of body fat. If you dont believe me buy a kilogram of candles and see how long they take to burn. If you are losing several pounds in the first couple weeks, you are mainly losing water. Its easy to lose a fair amount of weight in the first week. You can lose 4 pounds of bowel content and similar amount of water very easily in a couple days. The hard part is to burn off the body fat.

You should aim to control your diet and increase your exercise to burn off about a pound a week for the 15 weeks. That way you are actually losing body fat. Its much harder but more effective and the weight will stay off.

RE: The weight loss challenge? (in reply to Pimientito

Hi Pimiemtito

No, my plan is to loose 15 pounds over 3 months. Not a crash diet. And yes, I am an athlete - masters racing now with the old guys - some of them are as fast as they were in their twenties - darn fast! As we age we loose top end but our average power stays about the same.

I can burn off a lot of weight, 2 pounds a week is pretty safe for me to burn off, but it takes a bit of dedication to do that. My plan is just over a pound a week. Usually I find you have good days where you loose a pound or two, and then you plateau and afterwards do it again.

The secret for me is stop eating after dinner and go to bed a bit hungry - and ride my bicycle. Not that hard really but wine and treats always tempt me!

Good point about bowel content, I don't like starting a race full. You can loose a pound or two right there!

There is always the Sylvester Stallone’s diet… remember when one asked him if there were such a thing as a “diet sandwich” and he replied: “yeah, half a sandwich”. It might sound silly at first, but it is consistent with the core concept Piminetito illustrated, lower your calorie intake and increase its usage, ie burn it off with exercise.

May be, you can just indulge in “half” the wine and cookies you would normally consume.

Merry Christmas.

RE: The weight loss challenge? (in reply to cathulu

here's another tip that has worked for me.

don't starve yourself. eat often but in small portions. when you starve yourself, your body stores whatever you ate last as fat so that you'll have energy later. when you're constantly fueling yourself, there's no need for storing that energy anymore.

i'd like to join this challenge. i don't necessarily want to lose weight, just lower my body fat percentage.

I have one similar and think it's really good. I got it about 5 years ago when I had a back injury and I found that exercising on this kept me in a safe position and was low impact so I didn't do myself any further injury. Have you started using it yet?

RE: The weight loss challenge? (in reply to Arash

I can't take part, I already lost over 30 pounds over the last year or so. People ask me the secret all the time. I tell them EAT LESS MOVE MORE!

Seriously, it's easier said than done and it's not the first time I tried. What I figured out for me was that only sports or only diet don't work. I had to do both, and it had to be a diet not only for a few months to lose weight but one I could stick with only letting loose one day a week and on the holidays.

I spent a couple months intensely counting calories, very annoying task, but just a couple months was enough to get a general idea of which food has how much fat or carbs - I was suprised at how little I knew about this.

I do light weight lifting and a 45 minute run 2-3 times a week. Alone the running allows me to take in an extra few hundred calories a day without gaining weight.

I have read that one can only gain 4 kilos of pure muscle tissue per year. That makes 333g muscle per month. I was loosing 1kg per month so... math is working against me
but hey i can really recommend a gym to anybody. Especially if you play guitar etc. its good to have something in contrast to sitting around for hours with the guitar... if i had spent the same amount of time going to the gym like i did with guitar playing, i would be Arnold Schwarzenegger by now.

You gotta be joking Grisha!

You always look such a skinny guy! (unless you're really tall)

I'm about 148lbs now, 5'9"

Always have been between 135-150 since I was 18, no matter how many deep fried pizzas or burgers I've had.

It's something I've never even had to think about.

I'm pretty active, but have never done any sports or formal exercises or training.

Must be a genetic thing or something maybe?

(Sorry to gloat! )

cheers,

Ron
