Some things never change!

After many, many years I suddenly had a notion for some Corned Beef Hash and was delighted to find the tin was just as difficult to open as it was back in the 1950's.

Over the decades, this product must get first prize for presenting more customers to their local Accident & Emergency Units to have their gashed fingers stitched up or to be treated for salmonella poisoning, than any other product known to man.

Nice to see some things don't change!

cheers,

Ron

RE: Some things never change! (in reply to Ron.M

Just last night I was wondering about packaging for cat litter, noodles, cheese slices and coffee. It's just impossible to make a package that will open cleanly at the top for reuse (without scissors).

And plastic wrap, that rough edge that's supposed to be for tearing off a piece, I always end up ripping it apart with both hands. It's rediculous, I don't know why they even put that on there!

Years since I've had it - is that the one with a key that you slot the metal tab into and then wind it so that it splits the can?

Gosh no, Ailsa...

This is the "Noo 21 Century Upgraded" version with a ring-pull opener.
The idiot's 3 step pictorial instructions say..
1. Lift Tab
2. Pull to remove Lid.
3. Use a knife to ease out contents onto a plate.

Except that it doesn't work.

Even using pliers etc..the metal is not thin enough at the edges to break away.

So you pull and pull...until the tab breaks off, then you have to bust it open with a knife and then a screwdriver without serious injury from the razor-sharp exposed metal.

Even then, you are still only halfway home, as you still have to extract the contents which are jammed in and refuse to budge.
Making a hole at the other end helps to release the vacuum, but it is still mighty difficult.

Very tasty though!
Fried up with some onions and mashed potatoes...haven't had that in years!

Just got to wait 24hrs now to find out if it was salmonella free.

Ah...the old key and tab method?
I remember those cans well. You got them on tins of sardines too.

I think that was my first visit to A&E as a kid.

cheers,

Ron

First thought: "Jeez, take your time, but after half a century things don't usually taste the same as before."

Germans are so meticulous - they need different words for the same and one and the same thing.

It's just the Marcel Proust factor there, Ed.

Even Keith Floyd (the famous chef) said that sometimes he just felt like having a can of Heinz Tomato Soup or a Fray Bentos " Bake-in-the-Tin " pie...or that stuff (which totally freaks Americans out)....Bovril!
(They call it "that Limey crap".. ).

Actually, peasant grub can be pretty good, like Liver, or Black Pudding, or Haggis, or good old Mince and Potatoes with HP sauce and accompanied by slices of bread from a Scotch loaf etc. IMO.

I stayed at a top hotel in Paris for a week, eating at their high-class restaurant each night and having lunch in the city. (on expenses of course! ).

By the end of the week, having had my fill of Lobster or Medallions of Beef etc, in cream sauces and herbs, I would have given anything for some good, honest Fish and Chips with salt and vinegar!

Admittedly, you Continentals are spoilt for choice!

I've had some truly memorable food at some of the very cheap "family" restaurants in the residential areas of Madrid, which basically just had a very limited choice apart from the Plato Del Dia.
Also very cheap wine by the carafe, that leaves £5 Supermarket wine here tasting like monkey's p1ss..

cheers,

Ron

This is off topic but it just came into my mind and I don´t want to open a new thread for that...

Im watching "Cars" of Disney right now. At first I thought is rubbish... a movie for kids with speaking cars.. and if Im not lucky...singing cars... Now I watched it almost through and think... its rubbsh, a movie for kids with talking cars.. Well.. But it is touchy somehow. I like it.. There is an old classic (dont know what kind of) car in blue. It is the chef of a small town in the desert. It has a deep voice and reminds me very hard on you Ron... (Thats not negatively meant, but funny because the character of this car fits on you. hmm..This is of course the soft version made compatible for kids of this character... so it fits "almost"... :.D ) I think you need to see the movie to understand that.

Ron - I used to have the same problem. You have to put the tin in the fridge for a couple of hours. If it is at room temperature (at least in Spain) it wont come out of the tin. Pierce the top of the tin (opposite end of the lid) to remove the vacuum, remove the lid, a good shake and the whole lot should slide out of the tin.
