ISA - Gerardo Nuñez

After having a go at tabbing "siempre es tarde" and "calima" I decided I would like to tab the rumba Isa from the album Jucal....after all its only a rumba right?

Well all i can say I kind of regretted my decision to work this one out. It is its much harder than it sounds. Firstly Gerardo performs this at an insane velocity. I would suggest most people aim for 3/4 speed. There are many musical ideas, key changes and techniques in this piece. Meanwhile here is page 1.

As usual right click and "save target" to your desktop. Then change the extension from .txt to .jpg. I'll post more as I get it done. If anyone has already tabbed it or can already play this I would greatly value your contribution to this thread. Pimientito

gracias Pim, i love your Gerardo tabs!
unfortunately youtube is down for maintenance so i can't check it, but i'm pretty sure Ricardo plays this piece, he has a "fun version" up...the tuning is rondena i think and they played it with normal tuning but rondena fingering so it sounds weird...
also there was another person who played along the original and uploaded it, you can see the whole piece fingering there...

Yeah i know the video...thats not Isa, thats the rumba from "andando el tiempo" which should be in Rondeña tuning but its being played (in comedy manner) in normal tuning. I have that Rondeña rumba tabbed somewhere as well.

When youtube is back I will post the link to Gerardo playing Isa which is this tab. Meanwhile its straight forward fingering and normal tuning. Good luck guys.

i see, i was wrong then...
here's Gerardo's version:

and here's the other one (that's definitely Isa looking at the first couple of bars fingering) - strangely it's just noise without any sound...but it might be useful to you:

RE: ISA - Gerardo Nuñez (in reply to Pimientito

Thanks for posting the video. It helps with hand positions. Anyway here is the next part. Im not sure if all the timing is written correctly but I think I have the fingering accurate so far.
Here is Page 2

EDIT .Oopps, sorry folks, i got a couple of note wrong because the capo was confusing me. Here is the corrected page 2.

RE: ISA - Gerardo Nuñez (in reply to Pimientito

Thanks guys. Please upload any corrections or alternatives. it would be nice de get a definitive tab here.
Well i have spent all day doing page 3. Its been a bit madening because Gerardo is miming in his video and he isnt playing everything correctly. Consequently I have been copying his hand position with much frustration only to find some of the chords are played elsewhere....aaaarrggghh!

Anyway, i think I nailed the next section but am not sure about these chords in line 6. Please let me know if you think its different

RE: ISA - Gerardo Nuñez (in reply to Pimientito

I am still ironing out some technical problems in the rest of this piece so meanwhile here is a section further along in the composition at around 2:55.
Its a beautiful chord sequence with a solo over the top. The arpeggio is a little tricky and you have to lift the bar to get it. The 3rd chord has a jump with your first finger from the 5th to 1st string in the arpeggio.

The solo is straight forward enough until the descending diminished run.
Ive tabbed it twice. The first time is what Gerardo actually plays on the record. It would appear that the first group of six is a mistake as it doesnt match the rest of the run. However it does give us a clue about the technique. Gerardo says he does this with m and i. Start with m for the pull off and then i, m, i, m for each group of six.

The second time I have tabbed the same run for 3 finger picado. Its much easier to get fast using this technique. I think this is what gerardo actually does despite what he says. He has a habit of explaining something one way and performing it differently. We'll come back to this at the end of the composition in more depth. Meanwhile happy practising.

Nearly there now. I will try to post page 5 today too. I love this part of the piece. I am fairly sure this is his fingering. Its a good example of how Gerardo uses his technique to create a great melody.

RE: ISA - Gerardo Nuñez (in reply to Pimientito

Errrr.....ummmm......ok, I'm officially having problems finishing page 5.
Theres a group of chords that i cant get, partly because its multi tracked.
The video gives a bit of a clue to the bassline but my transcription doesnt fit what his fingers are doing.

Saying that he is miming so it doesnt mean his fingering is correct....BUT... the thing is that his second guitarist is doing the same thing in the video. I am going to post a version that sounds close enough and leave you guys to fill in the blanks...on the condition that someone PLEASE PLEASE feedback and post either a correction or alternative. It would be good to nail it.

Has anyone had any problems up until now with this piece? It has been a monster to transcribe...I'm only going to post easy stuff from now on

RE: ISA - Gerardo Nuñez (in reply to Pimientito

Here is page 5

The problem parts are lines 6 and 7. I will keep trying to get it but if you figure the correct version out please post it...and the flamenco community will be eternally grateful P

From here the rest of the piece is almost finished. At the end of page 6 simply repeat part C on page 4 and then repeat the chord sequence at the top of page 5.
All thats left is the picado run in the solo.....but thats for another day.

Oh, like today?

Don't lie, we all saw you play it at the curso!!

(Gerardo did the backing while Pim rocked out the Isa picado, no joke! Great honor was brought to our humble foro that day. )

Very cool. Curiously, did Pim play the whole piece and confirm his transcribed version with the maestro?
